AAA Data shows.new electric cars accounted for 38% of the market share (+113%) in France, used electric cars increased by 32%.

(Oilandgaspress) 18/09/26 – The August 2026 French market confirms the ongoing shift in the energy mix. Electric vehicles reached a new milestone, capturing nearly four out of ten new registrations, continuing the record set in July. In the used car market, the downward trend observed since the beginning of the year continued.

New electric car registrations reached 36,159 units in August, representing a 38% market share and a 113% increase. Since the beginning of the year, new electric car sales have totaled 322,097 units (30% market share, up 74%). In August, new electric cars accounted for 20,543 units (+36%) and a 42% market share among private buyers. Fleet sales also reached 42% market share (11,085 units, +87%).

This acceleration comes at a favorable time. Social leasing reopened on July 16, 2026, with 50,000 cars offered at a maximum of €200 per month, and the CEE “boost” subsidy, increased in 2026, can reach €5,700—not including the European battery bonus. The Tesla Model Y tops the month’s rankings (4,622 units), followed by the Renault 5 (2,316), the Renault Scenic V (1,745), the Renault Twingo IV (1,574), and the Citroën e-C3 (1,443).

Hybrid car sales, across all categories, represented 45% of the market in August (42,112 units, down 8%). Full hybrids (HEVs) totaled 16,837 units (18% market share, down 13%). Mild hybrids (MHEVs) declined by 5% to 18,849 units (20% market share). Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) remained stable (5,824 units, 6% market share), in a context where the weight-based tax, reduced to 1,500 kg since January 2026 with a reduction limited to 200 kg for PHEVs, penalizes this powertrain. Year-to-date, hybrid cars (all types combined) maintain a 50% market share.

Internal combustion engines saw a marked decline. Sales of gasoline cars fell by 40% to 10,903 units (12% market share), and diesel cars by 58% to 1,816 units (2% market share). This decline is occurring against a backdrop of rising fuel prices and stricter taxation coming into effect on January 1, 2026: the CO₂ penalty will be triggered at 108 g/km (compared to 113 g/km in 2025), with a cap of €80,000, and the weight-based penalty will be lowered to 1,500 kg. Gasoline-LPG vehicles saw a 26% increase to 3,361 units (4% market share). The used car market totaled 356,008 transactions in August, down 5%, confirming a downward trend observed since the beginning of the year. Year-to-date, transactions have reached 3,433,378 units (-4%).
