(Oilandgaspress) 28/08/26, New UK government data published shows nearly 172,000 solar installations have been fitted across the UK since the start of 2026. The surge follows the third-highest month for solar installations on record. Nearly 28,000 installations were completed across homes, businesses and larger-scale projects in July 2026, behind only March and June this year.
More than 19,800 rooftop solar panels were installed in July alone – equivalent to 1 installation every 2 minutes.
For the first time, the government is unveiling a regional breakdown of Britain’s solar revolution, revealing which parts of the country are making the switch to clean power.
Rooftop solar is helping to drive the surge, accounting for more than 7 in 10 installations during July – demonstrating the growing appetite among households to generate their own clean electricity.
Solar installations increased in every UK nation and English region over the last 12 months. Wales recorded a 18% rise, Scotland grew by 14%, while installations in the North East increased by 11%.
The increase in solar installations comes as major retailers including Currys, B&Q, Screwfix and Amazon prepare to offer plug-in solar panels following changes introduced by government.

Bencros Marine Fenders, the Slovakia-based manufacturer of rubber fenders for ports, tugs and workboats, announced at the SMM Start-up Night in Hamburg that the CO₂ savings embedded in its fenders are now independently verified and can be transferred to its customers as certified emission reductions. The first certificates go live on 2 September 2026 on the registry of carbon standard Proba.
Bencros manufactures fenders from high quality rejected rubber compounds sourced from tyre factories and industrial rubber production, blended with rubber powder from grinded end-of-life tyres, i.e. high-quality rubber that would otherwise be incinerated or disposed of. In 2024 and 2025 the company reused 5,070 tons of rubber waste in this way.
The resulting 13,112 tonnes of CO₂e emission reductions have been verified under Proba’s methodology, with Bureau Veritas acting as independent verification body.
“This is not an offset,” says Joost Komijn, founder and CEO of Bencros. “An offset is like planting a tree to offset your flight emissions. This saving happens inside the product you actually bought, in your own supply chain, and it comes straight off your own reported footprint. You buy the fender you were going to buy anyway – and with it, the CO₂ saving. It only exists because you bought the fender, and it is not for sale on any market.”
Gas networks have kept Britain’s energy system afloat during this summer’s heatwaves, producing as much as 50% of the country’s daily electricity generation on one day.
Periods of intensely hot but still weather have led to reduced wind generation and increased electricity demand, due to greater use of appliances such as fans and air conditioning units.
This weather phenomenon, known as Hitzeflaute (the German term for ‘heat lull’), has impacted four extended periods of three days or more since the start of summer.
During these periods, gas power stations have been needed to balance the system and fill the gap between supply and demand. This comes despite increased output from solar PV, with gas playing an important flexibility role when solar drops at the end of the day. Wind generation has hit below 70 GWh/day on six days this year, in contrast to just three days in 2025.
Gas generated on average 36% of electricity over the course of the four Hitzeflaute periods this year, reaching a high of 50% on 30 June. On this day, gas delivered 353 GWh of power, compared with 79 GWh from wind and only 32 GWh from net interconnector imports.
Gas generation across Hitzeflaute periods averaged 257 GWh/day in 2026 in comparison to 212 GWh/day up to mid-August last year, an increase of over 20%. Outside of this year’s spells of Hitzeflaute, gas has generated around a fifth of all electricity over the summer months.
Simultaneously, extreme weather has squeezed electricity supplies across Europe, making imports less dependable. Heat and drought forced nuclear plants in France, Romania and Hungary to cut output, meaning Britain’s gas-fired power stations had to do more of the heavy lifting.

The talks provided an opportunity to further explore how stronger multi-level partnerships can help address shared challenges and strengthening the UK’s long-term economic resilience.

DNV called on the energy sector to treat infrastructure resilience as a strategic and societal necessity in the face of ever-changing and increasingly complex threats, unveiling its new ‘From concern to control’ position paper at the ONS conference.
