100 pipeline vandals feared dead in Nigeria
At least a hundred suspected petroleum pipeline vandals were burnt to death yesterday along Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) pipeline at Arepo area in Ogun State according to various media reports.
Accounts say, the vandals were busy scooping fuel gushing from damaged pipelines when the fire suddenly started. The vandals, who were said to be from opposing camps, had engaged in a gun battle in a show of supremacy over who should control the pipeline and siphon petrol illegally. When dialogue could not solve the problem, they resorted to violence. It was during the gun duel that a bullet was reportedly fired and it hit the pipeline, resulting in the explosion.
