$500 million health programme in Ogoni land

The Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Corporation, SPDC, Mr. Mutiu Sunmonu, has disclosed that SPDC has embarked on a $500 million health programme in Ogoni land, Rivers State.
This emerged as Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria, ERA/FoEN, and Foundation for Environmental Rights, Advocacy and Development, FENRAD, have accused the company of playing double standard in its activities in Ogoni and other communities in Niger Delta.
Sunmonu, who is also the Country Chair Shell Companies in Nigeria, SCiN, equally disclosed that the company, contrary to general perception that it was responsible for more than 75 per cent of gas flaring in the Niger Delta, only flared 15 per cent of Nigeria’s total gas emission due to hydrocarbon activities.
