A new report published today by fuel poverty charities National Energy Action (NEA) and Energy Action Scotland (EAS) sets out how to achieve a fair and affordable transition to net zero for fuel poor households. Matt Copeland, Head of Policy and Public Affairs at National Energy Action (NEA) said:

“Our report shows that goals to end fuel poverty and reach Net Zero carbon emissions are deeply intertwined. We cannot eliminate our carbon emissions without upgrading the least efficient homes, which are disproportionately occupied by those on the lowest incomes. Our latest polling shows that 8 out of 10 (79%) British adults also believe that the UK is unlikely to reach net zero without financial support for fuel poor households and two thirds (66%) think it is important that the transition does not increase the cost of living for the poorest households, even if that means the Government providing additional financial support”.

The report follows the UK Government publishing its long-awaited Net Zero and Heat and Buildings strategies, which set out the funding for decarbonising our homes over the next three years. NEA warns that investment for the poorest households is less than half of the funding pledged within the Government’s 2019 manifesto for those living in the least efficient and most polluting homes. Moscow accuses Kiev of escalation, although indicates that it is ready for dialogue with the West. On December 1, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the troop build-up in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine was alarming. He vowed to raise this issue at a meeting with his Western colleagues in Sweden who, in their turn, at a meeting in Riga expressed concern over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. At a press conference in Riga, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Russia to move its troops away from the Ukrainian border and asserted that “we’ve made it clear to the Kremlin that we will respond resolutely, including with a range of high impact economic measures that we’ve refrained from using in the past.” Read More

A dispute over Nord Stream 2 continues in Washington. Republicans have delayed a vote on the National Defense Authorization Act for the next fiscal year, citing Democrats’ refusal to include amendments on mandatory sanctions against Nord Stream 2. There is no consensus on the pipeline among Democrats, too, but the Biden administration opposes pressure on the project, because it does not want to push Germany away. Meanwhile, Berlin seeks to stop Washington from turning up the heat on the project. Axios has recently published a letter from the German Embassy in the United States to the US Congress, which contains a request to abandon sanctions against Nord Stream 2 as it may erode trust in the United States. German Foreign Ministry officials declined to confirm or deny the authenticity of the letter to the paper, but said that contacts on the matter were underway with Washington. Read More

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled a lunar rover prototype jointly developed with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) at its Nissan Futures event here. The JAXA Space Exploration Innovation Hub Center is conducting research on lunar rovers — a key technology for space exploration. Nissan has been working with JAXA on driving controllability of the rovers since January 2020. A lunar rover must be able to traverse the moon’s powdery, rocky and undulating terrain and be energy efficient. Furthermore, energy sources for operating vehicles in space are limited. Nissan’s research applies the motor control technology it has developed through its production of mass-market electric vehicles such as the LEAF as well as the e-4ORCE all-wheel control technology featured on the all-new Ariya electric crossover. In particular, it is e-4ORCE that is boosting the lunar rover’s performance over tricky terrain. Read More
