Gunmen kidnap 14 oil workers in Nigeria
A staff bus conveying fourteen workers of Nestoil, an oil company in Ogba Egbema Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State has been diverted by unidentified gunmen in the area.
The Nestoil workers were kidnapped in the early hours of Friday around Omoku-Elele link road around 50 km (30 miles) from Port Harcourt, Rivers state, in the early hours of Friday , police said
It was gathered that the bus, which was carrying the company workers, was accosted and hijacked to an unknown destination under heavy gunfire.
A source who claimed to have witnessed the incident but pleaded anonymity disclosed that the workers were returning to Port Harcourt before the incident.
“We have recovered the vehicle they were traveling in before the incident occurred. Police are currently combing bushes around the area in a bid to find and release the victims,” said Nnamdi Omoni of Rivers state police.
“I do not think there was a foreigner among those kidnapped. Their abductors have not made any contact and nobody has been arrested yet,” he reportedly added.
Kidnapping for ransom is a problem in the oil producing areas of Nigeria and the southern Delta energy hub has seen an increase in kidnapping / pipeline vandalization crime and attacks by militants calling for more oil wealth to go to the impoverished region since January.
