NNPC Executives Do Not Charter Private Jets To Travel
Further to reports in a PUNCH newspaper publication involving use of private jets the NNPC released a statement to correct the wrong impression ‘needlessly created’ and ‘sensationalized’ by the article.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) stated emphatically that since assuming office as GMD of the NNPC and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Kachikwu has not used the Corporation’s funds to charter private jets, either from VISTAJET or any other private airline company.
The Minister’s preferred mode of travel is generally by commercial airline, except where it is absolutely necessary to use charter flights. Rather than what the PUNCH story insinuated about Dr. Kachikwu incurring expenses for the NNPC, the Minister has in fact used his deep knowledge of the operations of the offshore companies to save money for the NNPC and the Petroleum Ministry by insisting that since the Federal Government, through the NNPC, contributes 60% in the Joint Venture agreements it has entered into with international oil companies, then the NNPC is entitled to all facilities that are available as part of the operations of the Joint Venture Agreement.
Naturally, this includes the use of private jets where and when necessary in which expenses are borne by the JV partners. It does not cost the NNPC a single Naira to enjoy this facility.
It is necessary to add that since the grounding of the NNPC-owned private jet which has since been handed over to the Presidential Fleet as scrap, Dr. Kachikwu has resisted every pressure to procure and maintain another private jet for the NNPC. And even though it is a standard practice in the Oil and Gas Industry, the Minister has refused to retain the services of any private jet company.
WHAT DR. KACHIKWU HAS DONE IN FACT WAS TO CANCEL AN EXISTING CONTRACT WITH VISTAJET WHICH HE FOUND ON ASSUMPTION OF OFFICE AND WHICH WAS COSTING THE COUNTRY THREE MILLION DOLLARS EVERY MONTH.
By this, Dr. Kachikwu has saved the country expenditure that would have run into hundreds of millions of United States Dollars. This is in keeping with the resolve of the current government to reduce cost and unnecessary expenditure.
