Cresent announces major contract win to supply training products to BP Iraq
Aberdeen-based Cresent is delivering the most significant contract in its 30-year history after signing a multi-million pound deal to supply health and safety training products for workers in Iraq’s giant Rumaila oilfield. Cresent has been awarded the contract by BP Iraq, which is operating the field in a joint venture with PetroChina and the National Iraqi Southern Oil Company.
The contract involves all facets of Cresent’s business, including consultancy, project management, its control of work software system WorkSafe®, e-learning, and classroom-based learning. Its health and safety training products, which have been translated into Arabic and Mandarin specifically for the contract, are now being delivered to thousands of personnel on site.
The contract also involves Cresent providing train-the trainer sessions to Rumaila staff who can then go on to train others within their organisations in the state-of-the-art packages. This work is being carried out at training centres in Turkey and Jordan.
Some 750 Iraqis are also visiting Edinburgh over a nine-month period to receive training in WorkSafe® Control of Work systems developed by Cresent specifically for BP Iraq. The training packages also give Iraqi personnel an opportunity to see first-hand how a UK asset operates.
Cresent managing director Tracie Watson says the scale of the project should not be underestimated. She adds, “We are incredibly proud of this achievement, as this contract is not focused solely on one of our products. We are delivering a contract that involves every single part of the Cresent service offering.
“Cresent has been operationally present in the Middle East for a number of years – sales of our products have been particularly strong in this region – but this is the first time that we have worked in Iraq.
“Rumaila is 20 miles from the Kuwaiti border and is vast in size – it takes over two hours to drive from one side of the field to the other. It accounts for an estimated 40% of Iraq’s total output and the number of personnel operating in the oilfield, de-gassing stations and water pumping stations is immense. Our products have never previously been used on this scale.
“We have developed a bespoke package which has been tailored specifically over many months as a direct response to the clients’ needs and objective to install an electronic Control of Work system to help build a safe and competent workforce. WorkSafe® went live at Rumaila in mid-November, and already the feedback from those using it on the ground is very positive.
“Our ability to work with a client to deliver systems which meet both their own operational requirements and the demands of a heavily regulated working environment has been a cornerstone of Cresent since its inception 30 years ago, and has been key to some of our most significant contract wins.”
Cresent’s health and safety products are used by a range of clients working in potentially hazardous environments for a client base predominately in the oil and gas sector. The company has expanded rapidly in the past two years, and has recently relocated from Aberdeen city centre to new premises in Westhill in order to accommodate additional staff and trainees using on-site classroom facilities.
One of Cresent’s recent key milestones has been the introduction of its pioneering Control of Work software, WorkSafe®, which was launched in 2009. It generated sales in excess of £1 million during its first year on the market, and is now used by global oil majors on installations in the North Sea, South America, Africa, the Middle East and the Far East.
WorkSafe, which has now been translated into 10 different languages, is credited with allowing companies to make significant safety improvements at their facilities while reducing operating costs and eliminating unnecessary, time-consuming paperwork.
Cresent was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Aberdeen with a further office in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. It is an international service company offering safety consultancy, training, e-learning, and a range of safety products such as WorkSafe® and Learning Management System.
