Hays Oil & Gas Global Job Index rebounds in the second quarter of 2013

The Hays Oil & Gas Global Job Index for the second quarter of 2013 showed a stable or slightly stronger oil and gas labour market around the world when compared to the beginning of the year.
The Index, which charts the number of jobs posted on nine oil and gas portals across the world, was at 1.69 in June 2013, staying consistent with where it stood at the end of the first quarter (March 2013) at 1.68. The Index average for Q2 was 1.63 which is slightly lower than the average of 1.78 in the same period last year. The Index was established in October 2010 when it was set at 1; all subsequent months have been compared to this benchmark. This quarter’s Index has seen the greatest demand for mid to senior level professionals with significant experience.
“The general sentiment in the industry is neutral,” said John Faraguna, Global Managing Director of Hays Oil & Gas. “The global economy remains in recovery mode, however, we do see good signs of improvement in many regions around the world which should bode well for energy demand in the next few years.”
According to the analysis in the Index, countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are placing more focus on shale gas as a strategic priority. The UK just announced tax incentives for shale gas production and a US Department of Energy study has shown no evidence of contamination of western Pennsylvania water aquifers by fracking chemicals. It won’t be very long before other countries realize the potential of this resource to enable energy self-sufficiency and replace coal with cleaner natural gas. How this will impact the global demand for and price of oil remains to be seen, but it will likely have a significant impact on the economics of LNG and could quite possibly have a destabilising effect on places like the Middle East.
