Pipelines can preserve their integrity with continuous inspection. The more inspection performed, the lesser the risk

The recent oil spill last week in Arkansas, USA brought light to the risks involved to pipelines transporting fuel across international borders. The news brought into scrutiny the security and inspection of pipeline spread over a large distribution network.
An upcoming conference on Global Pipeline Integrity in Abu Dhabi is focused into looking at cross-border pipeline regulation and threat mitigation practices that reduce human and capital investment. In an exclusive pre-event interview, when asked about the significance of a pipeline integrity strategy, Amin Kharbouch, Major Projects Coordination and Division Manager at ADNOC stated ”It is very important to establish such strategy and to monitor it as we monitor critical maintenance plans”. On his opinions about what are the new solutions within the area, he said “Education and rolling out pipeline strategy is an important step”
Pipeline inspection and risks is a major theme in this years summit. On the co-relation between pipeline inspection and risk, Kharbouch said “Risk and inspection are inversely proportional. The more inspection you make the less risk you will be subjected to. The better the resolution of inspection coupled with verification strategy the less risk expected.” Questioning further on how can the risks be mitigated to make pipelines resilient, he added “We can always increase the remaining life of pipelines with proper corrosion control programs and increase the performance of such program with continuous and representative monitoring program.”
Amin Kharbouch is scheduled to speak at the upcoming 3rd Annual Global Pipeline Integrity Management Summit, scheduled to take place between 27-29 May at the Park Rotana Hotel, Abu Dhabi. With a preconference work shop on day one, the conference will see representation from Saudi Aramco, Breitling Oil & Gas, Qatar Petroleum, Indian Oil Corp and the Petroleum Institute amongst many others. Supported by the Pigging Products & Services Association (PPSA), the conference is sponsored by Velosi Asset Integrity Ltd.
