Oil production has slumped to a record low as the UK industry’s future hangs in the balance.
In the first six months of this year, 17.4 million tons of crude was extracted from the North Sea and the mainland, according to Department for Energy and Net Zero estimates. This compares with 20 million tons in the same period last year and nearly 50 million tons in 2003. North Sea-focused firms are slashing investment in the UK after a windfall tax was introduced last year Read More
Saudi Arabia’s crude exports to India jumped 69% to 820,000 barrels per day (bpd) in August 2023 from 484,000 bpd in July.
However, oil exports from the UAE to the South Asian country fell nearly 6% to 273,000 bpd in August from 290,000 bpd a month ago, state-owned Press Trust of India (PTI) reported, quoting data from energy cargo tracker Vortexa. The world’s third largest oil consumer also trimmed imports from Russia for a third straight month to 1.46 million bpd in August, down from 1.91 million barrels a month earlier. India’s total crude imports declined 7% to 4.35 million bpd during the period but is likely to pick up from October as demand is expected to surge in the fourth quarter.
“Refiners have raised imports from Saudi Arabia off the back of strong refinery runs and lower refinery supplies from Russia,” said Vortexa’s head of Asia-Pacific analysis Serena Huang. Given tight crude supplies from Saudi Arabia, it remains to be seen whether imports from the Kingdom can be sustained at this level, she added. Read More
UK Ministers are expected to announced today that the de facto ban on onshore wind farms is being ditched.
The U-turn is set to be confirmed later as Rishi Sunak struggles to quell Tory infighting over planning rules and the Net Zero drive.
Former Cop26 president Alok Sharma has been leading backbench pressure to drop rules which allow a single objection to block development. A Government source said: ‘We are very clear that onshore wind developments should have the consent of, and benefit, local communities.
‘However, we want to see the sector thrive and believe that this is an important step forward.’ Read More
Saab announces a new feature for its Barracuda Ultra-lightweight Camouflage Screen (ULCAS) giving armed forces the possibility to combine protection from the enemy with the possibility to communicate with friendly forces.
Barracuda camouflage nets provide vital protection for a soldier, hiding the operator from for example radar sensors. However, the same characteristics that provide that protection, also limits the use of GPS and/or VHF communications to and from underneath the net.
Saab’s new Frequency Selective Surface technology (ULCAS-FSS) allows selected radio frequencies to pass easily either way through the camouflage net, while protecting against the higher frequencies of electromagnetic waves used by radar systems.
The represents a significant advancement in modern signature management technology.
“Thanks to our expertise within signature management, we are taking camouflage to the next level with this novel feature. It changes how soldiers communicate while keeping multispectral protection, and so introduces a new era of tactical communication flexibility, offering unparalleled capabilities,” says Henning Robach, head of Saab’s business unit Barracuda. Saab’s camouflage solutions, including the ULCAS with FSS feature will be shown during the DSEI 2023 event in London, 12-15 September at stand H7-210. Read More

Ricardo plc has undertaken an in-depth life cycle assessment of aftermarket valve components, which has concluded that additive manufacturing has a significantly lower impact on the environment. Commissioned by IMI Critical Engineering for its additive manufacturing technology Retrofit3D, the study identified opportunities to reduce the climate change impact of certain replacement valve parts. As part of this process, the valves’ global warming potential can now be reduced by between 85%-96% depending on valve size and repair scenario.
IMI Critical Engineering designs and manufactures highly specialised valves and actuators to help control the flow of steam, gas and liquids serving the oil and gas, petrochemicals, water and power industries. The valves used in these sectors are subject to harsh operating conditions, which can lead to deleterious phenomena such as erosion or cavitation. When this type of damage is found, upgrades are required in the form of a new disk stack.
Ricardo was asked by IMI Critical Engineering to apply its expertise in life cycle assessments to determine the environmental impact of three replacement scenarios for two different valve sizes (large and small). These scenarios included: replacement of disk stack via only traditional manufacturing methods; replacement of the full valve via traditional manufacturing methods; and replacement of the disk stack only via additive manufacturing.
The life cycle assessment found that the additive disk stack replacement manufactured by Retrofit3D was the preferable scenario across all the environmental indicators analysed. The small valve resulted in 146kg of carbon dioxide equivalent when the Retrofit3D additive manufacturing process was used to produce the replacement disk stack. The large valve resulted in 1,360kg of carbon dioxide equivalent using the same process.
All calculations were based on an assumed system lifetime of ten years. For the large valve, this represented a 96% climate change impact saving when compared with replacement of the full valve via traditional manufacturing, and a 94% saving when compared with replacement of the disk stack only via traditional manufacturing. For the small valve, it represented a saving of 87% and 85% respectively. Any use efficiency savings were not accounted for in this study due to the wide range of potential use scenarios. If these were accounted for, the savings may be higher.
Analysis of the downstream transportation methods for the new valve and components showed that transitioning from air freight to 80% sea freight and 20% road freight would reduce the total climate change impact in all replacement scenarios by 97%. Read More
