Automotive News November 1, 2023; foreseeing future EV technologies
London, 01 November, 2023, (Oilandgaspress): – Rivian engineers Lilly Macaruso and Alex Anderson, team #187 Limestone Legends, made history at the Rebelle Rally when they drove an R1T across the finish line on Friday — the first fully-electric vehicle ever to win the competition.
The Quad-Motor R1T is at home in many types of terrain thanks to its software-determined Drive Modes that include five distinct off-road modes. As the longest off-road rally course in the country at over 1,500 miles, Rebelle offers the chance to put them all to the test. Driving an all-electric vehicle for eight days across desert, forest and rock was a new experience for Rivian’s rookie teams. It meant getting to know the vehicle more intimately than ever before, to have the confidence it takes to be out there with nothing more than a map and compass.
At Rebelle, all the technology we’ve built into the R1T distills down to the purest driving experience there is — trusting your machine (not to mention your navigator) to get you where you need to go. Read More
Porsche AG and H2 Green Steel have signed an agreement for the supply of CO₂-reduced steel: The aim is to further improve the emissions balance of Porsche vehicles by using CO₂-reduced steel. H2 Green Steel plans to produce steel using renewable energy in Boden, Sweden, starting end of 2025. From 2026, Porsche and various direct Porsche suppliers of production material are to be supplied with low-emission steel from H2 Green Steel. The material would have one of the lowest carbon footprints on the market. H2 Green Steel relies on an innovative production process with hydrogen and electricity from renewable energy sources. Production of the steel is therefore almost CO₂-free. According to H2 Green Steel, this results in up to 95% lower CO₂ emissions than conventional steel production with coking coal. Up to 35,000 tons of the low-emission steel produced in Sweden are to be used per year for the series production of Porsche vehicles. By way of comparison: in 2022, 220,000 tons of steel were used in Porsche vehicles. The proportion of steel in Porsche’s vehicles has been continuously reduced in recent years. In the meantime, Porsche is increasingly relying on aluminium for lightweight construction. However, steel remains one of the key elements in sports car construction, however, due to its the excellent mechanical properties. “Energy, processes and materials account for a significant share of CO₂ emissions in the supply chain. That is why we want to increase the use of recycled materials and green electricity in the production processes of direct suppliers as part of our decarbonisation efforts,” comments Barbara Frenkel. New revised front and rear fascias feature new styling elements that underscore the SUV’s distinguished presence, while new wheels, and exterior colors, new decorative interior inlays, and seats with contrasting stitching highlight the car’s range-topping position among Audi’s wide lineup of Q-model SUVs.

Toyota announced today that it will be offering a TRD Performance Package for Tundra customers starting in early 2024. Recognizing the opportunity to leverage the new Tundra and its twin turbocharged, i-FORCE V6 engine, Toyota sought to bring something truly unique to its customers. “In factory trim, the base i-FORCE engine produces 389 peak horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,400 rpm,” said Greg Bernas, vice president, Toyota Service Parts and Accessories Development. “The TRD Performance Package increases power output to 421 horsepower at 5,200 rpm, while peak torque comes on 400 rpm sooner, delivering 479 lb-ft. of torque at 2,000 rpm, broadening the torque band and significantly improving power delivery at throttle tip in,” Bernas said. “On the i-FORCE MAX Tundra, the kit boosts horsepower from 437 to 469.”
Building on the strength of Toyota’s i-FORCE engine design, the engineers increased airflow going into the turbochargers, while optimizing the engine management calibration via software. The TRD Performance Package employs larger, higher-flowing dual intakes coupled with a higher flowing cat-back exhaust that reduces back pressure. With the hard parts installed, the engine management calibration is optimized to take advantage of the new hardware and 91 octane premium fuel, an essential element that allows Toyota engineers to optimize engine output. Tundra TRD Pro buyers can expect the same horsepower and torque gains from their i-FORCE MAX powertrain. Unique throttle tuning compliments the increased powertrain performance resulting in a sporty and powerful driving feel. The TRD Performance Package also includes exclusive visual cues, including a special badge on the tailgate and a unique exhaust tip treatment. Together, the sound of the turbochargers spooling up and the menacing exhaust note provide auditory proof of a measurable performance enhancement worthy of TRD. Read More
