Bentley has been working on a time machine, faithfully and painstakingly recreating its iconic Speed Six from 1930. It’s called a continuation, not a replica, which means Bentley used the same original design drawings, sourced the same materials, and employed the same techniques to build it as the automaker did nearly a century before.

This car has a history. In fact, Woolf Barnato (then the Bentley chairman and a three-time Le Mans race winner) made a bet that he could beat the Cannes-to-Calais Blue Train in his own Speed Six. Traveling across 570 miles with co-driver Dale Bourne, Bernato beat the train to Calais so soundly that he loaded his Speed Six onto a ferry and chugged across the English Channel, still arriving in London four minutes before the train got to Calais. The French police later fined the Bentley executive for racing on public roads–he averaged a blistering 43 miles per hour. Bentley says its classic Speed Six is one of the most important models in its history, as it was the winning car in the iconic Le Mans races in 1929 and 1930. The heart of the car is a 6.5-liter straight six engine designed by W.O. Bentley himself back in the 1920s and recreated exactly to the original specification, says Bentley’s Mike Sayer, head of product communications. Read more

The eFuel Story; eFuels (electric fuel) are synthetic, liquid fuels. They are produced from hydrogen obtained purely from renewable energy, and CO₂ (carbon dioxide), which can be filtered from the ambient air.

They provide a potentially CO2 near-neutral fuel that existing vehicles can use with no modifications, can also be used with existing fuel station infrastructure and also blended with traditional gasoline. Porsche, together with international partners and the Chilean operating company Highly Innovative Fuels (HIF) have established the Haru Oni pilot plant in Chile. The location was chosen because of the significant level of consistent strong winds that are harnessed to drive a wind turbine generating renewable electricity. In Chile the perfect conditions are available for 270 days a year – more than four times better than any suitable location in Europe.

The electricity from the wind turbine powers electrolysis that produces hydrogen from water. Biogenic CO2 is captured from brewing processes, ahead of the introduction next year of Direct Air Capture (DAC) to extract CO2 from the atmosphere. The gases are combined to produce methanol, which is then converted using methanol-to-gasoline synthesis to produce eFuel. The eFuel is then refined further to meet current filling station standards.

The target is to produce no more CO2 when burned than the amount required to produce the fuel originally and therefore closing the gap to 100 per cent well-to-wheel sustainability. The pilot plant in Chile is aiming to produce 100,000 litres per year, with the fuel being used for lighthouse projects to demonstrate the important step towards the further ramp-up of eFuel technology. Bentley is actively researching alternative fuels, including bio-derived fuels and eFuels, as part of its future strategy leading up to full electrification. Currently, all models in the Bentley range are compatible with renewable fuels, and the company is working on its long-term sustainability approach. Read More

Andrea the robot on tour of the Mercedes-Benz Museum
Andrea the android was presented to the public at the Hochschule der Medien (HdM) on 7 December 2022. The robot comes from Japan and makes artificial intelligence (AI) tangible for everyone. This is one of the goals set by HdM’s Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence (IAAI), which includes the “Humanoid Lab”, Andrea’s academic home. There, humanoid robots like Andrea are used to research new paths involving multimodal human-machine interaction. The institution deliberately opted for an androgynous android in order to find out how people react to different genders of robot. Andrea can sit upright and perform 52 upper body movements – from head and shoulders to hips. The face alone is able to move in 13 ways. Another goal: artificial intelligence (AI) should be made something to experience. Andrea can talk to visitors quite naturally. The robot speaks eight languages, including German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. For this, it uses a synthetic voice specifically generated by AI. Read More

Unveiled at Monterey Car Week 2024, the Lamborghini Temerario(1) has become a new benchmark in the super sports car segment owing to its unrivaled performance features: not only the hybrid powertrain combining a twin-turbo V8 engine with three axial flow electric motors, delivering a total power output of 920 CV, but also the new approach to chassis design.

Rouven Mohr, Chief Technical Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, unmasks the new Temerario with a detailed description of the new multi-technology spaceframe chassis, designed to withstand the higher loads deriving from the hybrid power unit, combining excellent mechanical qualities with remarkable efficiency in weight reduction.

These technologies made it possible to minimize the constructional complexity of the spaceframe, while at the same time enabling a high level of functional integration of the hybrid powertrain. In fact, the number of structural components has been reduced by 50%, along with an 80% reduction of heat welds. The new construction archetype has led to a 25% increase in torsional stiffness compared to the previous generation spaceframe, making a significant contribution to the vehicle’s excellent driving dynamics.

(1) The vehicle is not yet offered for sale and is therefore not subject to Directive 1999/94/EC. The fuel consumption and emissions data is in the type approval stage Read full article
