UK energy security with new gas sales agreement Equinor and Centrica sign long-term gas sales agreement of 55 TWh of natural gas per year (around 5 billion cubic meters – bcm) for a period of 10 years starting 1 October 2025 at terms reflecting market prices. The total contract value would be around £20 billion assuming current prices. “I am very pleased to strengthen the energy partnership with the UK and our longstanding partner and customer Centrica. This agreement will continue to support the UK’s energy security with reliable gas supplies from the Norwegian continental shelf. The flexibility that natural gas offers will play a key role in enabling further development of renewable power and decarbonisation in the UK”, says Equinor’s president and CEO Anders Opedal.

For nearly 50 years, Equinor and partners have developed the Norwegian Continental Shelf to be the largest and most reliable provider of energy to Europe. Britain currently imports nearly 2/3 of its gas requirements from Norway, with Equinor being the major supplier. The annual volumes under this agreement will cover nearly 10% [1] of total annual UK gas demand which makes the agreement among the largest in Equinor bilateral portfolio. Beyond investments in the UK’s oil and gas production, Equinor already operates three offshore wind farms at Sheringham Shoal, Dudgeon and Hywind Scotland, the world’s first floating offshore wind farm. Dogger Bank is under development and will be the world’s largest offshore windfarm once completed. Together with partners Equinor is also developing the UK’s first CO2 transport and storage project and a gas power plant with CO2 capture.

Europe’s first city with a vehicle‑to‑grid (V2G) car‑sharing service Renault Group, MyWheels and We Drive Solar, together with the Municipality of Utrecht, announce the go-live of Europe’s first large‑scale Vehicle‑to‑Grid (V2G) car‑sharing service: Utrecht energized. The initiative supports a more sustainable, efficient energy system in a city where 35 % of rooftops are already fitted with solar panels. Thanks to the V2G technology, electric vehicles can store energy and feed it back to the local grid during peak periods, so renewable power remains available around the clock. By combining a shared‑mobility service with advanced technology, the project keeps the local grid in balance while accelerating the transition to sustainable urban transport.

The launch of this large‑scale car‑sharing service, using the V2G technology – was announced in November 2024 and is now live. Representing a decisive step towards cleaner mobility, this initiative promotes large‑scale availability of electric shared cars while helping to balance the city’s electricity network through the pioneering bidirectional charging technology. The Netherlands is a global leader in solar and wind-based energy deployment, and Utrecht ranks among Europe’s most progressive renewable‑energy cities, with 35 % of roofs equipped with solar panels. The use of renewables presents challenges for the grid due to their massive deployment, causing high peaks in energy supply. To manage the grid with a high proportion of renewables requires a system that quickly adapts to the changes in energy generation and consumption. This is where the V2G technology steps in to address these challenges.
The roll‑out is now live with 50 Renault 5 E‑Tech electric cars. Available via a car‑sharing service managed by MyWheels, the vehicles use V2G bidirectional charging technology developed by Mobilize, Renault Group’s brand dedicated to new mobilities. It is the first time this innovative technology has been made available for public infrastructure, provided by We Drive Solar. The 500 bidirectional cars can deliver 10 % of the flexibility required in the Utrecht region to balance solar‑ and wind‑generated electricity at peak times.
Renault Group today reinforced its commitment to Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology and urged policymakers and industry stakeholders to accelerate its deployment across Europe. V2G allows electric vehicles (EVs) to not only draw energy from the grid but also to discharge electricity back during peak times, turning them into mobile energy resources.
Successfully implementing V2G at scale requires a harmonized approach across the entire energy ecosystem, bringing together vehicles, charging infrastructure, energy providers, and grid operators. Renault Group is already demonstrating this in France, where customers are successfully using V2G with models like the R5, Alpine A290, R4, New Megane, and New Scenic.
While the technology is market-ready and offers significant benefits – including grid flexibility, reduced energy costs for EV owners, and a lower total cost of ownership – unlocking this potential requires overcoming current regulatory and technical barriers.
Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC) In 2024, IREC made significant strides towards our mission to build the foundation for rapid adoption of clean energy and energy efficiency to benefit people, the economy, and our planet—through measurable wins in three complementary areas of our work:
• advancing key state regulations that enable rapid and just clean energy growth (IREC has shaped energy regulations in more than 41 states and U.S. territories!),
• building a qualified energy workforce with opportunities for candidates of all backgrounds,
• and capacity building at the local level to give communities tools to achieve their energy goals.
Each of these areas will be vital to America’s clean energy transition. Even as the U.S. policy landscape shifts, sound regulations, workforce development, and on-the-ground implementation will remain vital to the growth of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
From connecting individuals to clean energy apprenticeships to supporting the adoption of new regulatory approaches and helping communities deploy more solar and electric vehicle charging infrastructure, IREC’s work in 2024 brought the country closer to our vision of a 100% clean energy future that is reliable, resilient, and equitable.
