Halliburton in collaboration with Aker BP, executed the first operation using the Enhanced Remote Operated Control System (eROCS) and Optime Tubing Hanger Orientation System (OTHOS) in the Norwegian continental shelf. The achievement sets a new direction for Halliburton’s subsea operations, with broader access to digital control and umbilical-less solutions in offshore regions.
The operation marked a breakthrough in subsea control and completions. The use of digital hydraulic control and the OTHOS allowed the precise installation and orientation of the vertical Christmas Tree tubing hanger without umbilicals, conventional tubing hanger orientation tools, or standard blowout preventer alignment equipment. The approach simplified planning and interface requirements, reduced operational complexity, lowered risks and costs, and increased rig flexibility for Aker BP. . Read More

New Severe plus air pollution forecast for Delhi on Diwali
Forecasting model by Cambridge Judge Business School and the Indian Institute of Technology, based on a successful time-series model developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, says air pollution in Delhi will be in the Severe plus category much earlier than in past years.
A new weekly forecast model for air pollution in Delhi, a serious problem and health hazard as winter approaches, was launched today (20 October) by academic researchers at Cambridge Judge Business School and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
The first weekly Delhi Air Pollution Tracker (CJBS–IIT Delhi) forecast, issued on Diwali Day (the Indian festival of lights) for the week beginning Monday 20 October, forecasts that Delhi’s air quality will deteriorate rapidly in the next two weeks due to stagnant weather and crop-burning, “pushing the city into the Severe plus category much earlier than in recent years”.
The air pollution forecasting model, which will inform policymakers and individuals about the air pollution problem in the upcoming weeks, is based on a successful forecasting model for the spread of the COVID-19 virus issued by Cambridge Judge in 2021. The forecasts are based on a structural time series model outlined in a research paper published in Harvard Data Science Review. . Read More
Kent has been awarded the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for the Upgrade Services for the Khafji Desalter and Water Treatment Plant & Related Facilities (UDWT) Project by Al-Khafji Joint Operations (KJO). KJO is jointly owned and operated by Aramco Gulf Operations (AGOC) and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC).
The project, scheduled to begin on 6 October 2025 with a duration of 15 months, will be delivered primarily from Kent’s UK Woking offices by a team of around 150 engineers and specialists. They will be working in close collaboration with colleagues from Kent KSA, whose role will focus on local knowledge, site surveys, and management of in-country third-party work. This balanced approach ensures that global expertise is combined with local insight, strengthening delivery for KJO.
The FEED scope covers the design of new desalter facilities alongside the upgrade and expansion of existing water treatment plants at Al-Khafji. The desalter design will sustain production of 300,000 barrels per day of sweet crude for the next 20 years, while managing an expected water cut of up to 60 per cent. The facility will incorporate advanced separation and desalting technologies, designed to process up to 315,000 barrels per day and reduce flaring to minimise environmental impact. . Read More
United Kingdom’s remaining proven and probable oil and gas reserves were estimated at 2.9 billion barrels of oil equivalent (Bboe) at the end of 2024, according to the latest Reserves and Resources Report published by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA).
While total reserves declined slightly year-on-year, the report highlights a significant 31% increase in prospective resources, now estimated at 4.6 Bboe, largely due to new opportunities identified under the 33rd Offshore Licensing Round. The UK also holds an estimated 6.2 Bboe in contingent resources, representing discovered but undeveloped petroleum that could be matured through new investment and field development activity.
To date, a total of 47.7 Bboe has been produced from the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). In 2024, production totaled 401 MMboe, with two new field development plans adding less than 50 MMboe to reserves. The NSTA noted that limited exploration drilling last year—only four wells, with less than 100 MMboe discovered—underscores the need for continued investment to progress drill-ready prospects and sustain the UK’s offshore production base. The report also reaffirms that the UK’s petroleum mix remains roughly 70% oil and 30% gas. . Read More
UK’s carbon storage industry has reached an important milestone with the drilling of an appraisal well on the Hewett field, in the Southern North Sea, for the Bacton CCS project. It is the first carbon storage appraisal well to be drilled on acreage licensed by the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) as part of the world’s first large-scale carbon storage licensing round in 2023.
The appraisal well, operated by global energy company Eni, is an important step towards assessing the carbon storage potential of the UK continental shelf (UKCS). The basin has up to 78 gigatonnes of potential storage capacity in depleted reservoirs and saline aquifers, enough to sequester all the CO2 emitted in the UK since the industrial revolution.
The NSTA estimates that up to 100 stores may need to be appraised to identify the best candidates for storage and help the UK reach its net zero target by 2050.
Hewett, 18 miles off the Norfolk coast, was one of the UKCS’s longest serving gas fields. Its original operator, Phillips, started production from the field in 1969, making Hewett only the third North Sea field to reach this stage, after West Sole and Leman. The field had produced 3.5 trillion cubic feet of gas by the time it permanently shut down in 2023.. Read More
