London, December 04, 2025, (Oilandgaspress) –––A tidal turbine in Scotland has set a new reliability record, operating for more than six and a half years without any unplanned maintenance. Located in the Pentland Firth—a channel known for some of the world’s fastest tidal currents—the turbine is part of the MeyGen project, which has been generating power since 2016. The site’s four turbines currently supply enough electricity for around 7,000 homes, with tidal energy offering the advantages of predictability and consistent output.
Project operator SAE Renewables plans to add 20 more turbines by 2030, with a long-term ambition of expanding to 130 units, which would make MeyGen one of the world’s largest tidal arrays. The turbine’s exceptional durability is seen as a major step toward reducing costs and proving tidal energy’s long-term commercial viability. Read More

Humanoid, a UK-based robotics and AI company unveiled HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal, a humanoid robot that sets a new benchmark for development speed and operational readiness. Built from initial design to working prototype in just five months, compared with the industry average of 18 to 24 months, Alpha achieved stable walking only 48 hours after final assembly, a milestone that typically takes weeks or even months.

The secret lies in Humanoid’s approach to both hardware and software. The team relied on ultra-precise 3D modeling to create prototypes that closely match simulation, minimizing the “sim-to-real” gap that often slows humanoid development. Using Nvidia’s Isaac Sim and Isaac Lab, the team trained more than 52.5 million seconds of reinforcement-learning locomotion data in simulation, equivalent to nearly 19 months of conventional training, in only two days. The robot took its first real-world steps after just 3.2 million seconds, with minimal randomization needed to handle external pushes of up to 350 Newtons.
Standing 179 centimeters (5’10’’) tall with 29 degrees of freedom excluding end-effectors, Alpha combines top-class upper-body strength with a bimanual payload capacity of 15 kilograms (33 lbs). Its modular end-effectors can be fitted with either 12-degree-of-freedom five-fingered hands or 1-degree-of-freedom parallel grippers, while its head features six RGB cameras, two depth sensors, and a six-microphone array. The robot’s body is equipped with haptic sensors, force/torque sensors, and joint torque feedback, all powered by Nvidia Jetson Orin AGX and Intel i9 processors. Its battery provides three hours of swappable power, ensuring extended operation during testing and development. Read More

U.S. tariffs imposed under Donald Trump are causing major disruption to Canada’s steel industry, particularly in Ontario. Algoma Steel, one of the country’s largest producers, announced it will lay off about 1,000 workers, citing the tariffs as the primary reason. The company says these “unprecedented” duties have severely reduced its access to the U.S. market—normally half of its total shipments—and added nearly C$90 million in direct costs in a single quarter.
In response, Algoma is shutting down its blast furnace and coke-making operations earlier than planned and accelerating its transition to electric-arc furnace technology by 2026. Industry observers say the change is less a voluntary modernization than a forced adjustment to survive, with significant economic fallout for workers and communities dependent on steel production. In September 2025, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government announced a public-private project to advance the social implementation of hydrogen by accelerating efforts to put it into practical use. As the initiative’s first step, fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) Crown taxis have begun operating on the streets of Tokyo.
Although the vehicles are large and can be challenging to maneuver on narrow roads, they offer excellent quietness and acceleration. Drivers have praised them, saying, “They’re quite cool,” and “I’ve never driven a car this good before.”
At the time of filming, only three were on the road, but 200 are scheduled to be introduced by the end of fiscal 2025—meaning more opportunities for passengers to try them out. The base fare is ¥500 (at the time of filming), the same as a standard taxi, making it an easy choice.
Data collected from these hydrogen taxis will help explore the optimal balance of hydrogen supply and demand. Toyota President Koji Sato, who is also co-chair of the Japan Hydrogen Association, described the initiative as “a tremendous first step with meaningful implications for large-scale social implementation.” Read More
