(Oilandgaspress) -] Iberdrola España, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Spain, has commissioned the first two large-scale battery storage systems in Spain, located in Alarcón (Cuenca). With a storage capacity of 60 MWh and a power output of around 30 MW each, the Romeral and Olmedilla batteries can store enough emission-free energy to supply electricity to more than 13,000 homes with electricity for two hours.

Construction of the batteries generated more than 100 jobs and involved various national suppliers. Iberdrola has thus once again demonstrated that renewable energies drive skilled employment and industry in Spain.

Battery storage is an innovative technology that maximises the use of clean energy. It also improves the quality of the electricity supply, ensuring the stability and reliability of electrical networks, while integrating and harnessing energy generated by renewable sources.

The Romeral and Olmedilla batteries form part of a set of six Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with a combined power output of 173 MW. The IDAE recognised this project as a Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE), providing it with €37.5 million in funding.
