Iberdrola to build largest photovoltaic solar park in the Basque Country

(Oilandgaspress) -] Ekienea, a company led by Iberdrola España, a subsidiary of the Iberdrola Group in Spain, has obtained prior administrative authorisation from the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, marking a key milestone for the project and strengthening its plans to begin operations in 2027.

Touted to become the largest photovoltaic plant in the Basque Country this initiative is promoted by Iberdrola España (75%) with the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), the Basque Government’s energy agency (18%), Krean (Mondragón Corporation, 5%), and the Provincial Council of Álava (2%) through Enargi.

The Ekienea project, with a planned investment of €90 million, will generate clean, local energy for industrial self-consumption and will produce around 155 GWh/year, equivalent to the consumption of some 45,000 households, reducing CO₂ emissions by around 15,500 tonnes a year and contributing to the Basque Country’s decarbonisation and industrial competitiveness objectives.

The project will create up to 300 jobs during peak construction periods.
