Ofgem’s vision welcome step towards necessary UK’s energy system reforms
Responding to Ofgem’s newly published “five-year vision for building sustainable and affordable regional energy grids, supporting a low carbon, cheaper future for the UK“, Polly Billington, Chief Executive of UK100, says:
“We are delighted to see Ofgem credit UK100 as one of the reasons it has set out a vision for a future-proof energy system that places local and regional leaders at its core. We have long advocated for a decentralised energy system that works with local authorities and for local communities. It’s great to see this reflected in Ofgem’s plans.”
“That the vision also recognises flexibility is key and the commitment to deliver a £2.7bn investment in upgrading the network to support electric vehicle expansion, heat pump roll-out, and more local, renewable energy generation is also welcome.”
On the day the Climate Change Committee launches its latest progress report, finding the UK Government is good at setting Net Zero targets but failing to deliver against them, Polly adds:
“Ultimately, after only recently recognising our energy system is not fit for purpose, Ofgem has taken a vital step towards a necessary overhaul. By recognising the power of local and the need for long-term, integrated planning, their vision has laid solid foundations for concrete action.”
“With the latest Climate Change Committee report highlighting the UK Government’s failure to deliver against ambitious targets, we should not underestimate the value of Net Zero proposals that have a clear strategy for turning words into action.”
