Apex Announces REC Purchase Agreement for Heritage Wind Project

Transaction Will Support New York State’s Decarbonization Goals While Generating Significant Community Benefits

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Apex Clean Energy today announced the execution of a renewable energy certificate (REC) purchase agreement with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) for the full output of RECs from Heritage Wind, located in Orleans County, New York. The 126 MW project will help support New York’s transition to a carbon-free electricity grid by 2040.

“Heritage Wind exemplifies how wind power can serve both state and local priorities, advancing New York’s energy leadership while creating transformative benefits for the project community,” said Ken Young, CEO of Apex. “Thanks to years of diligence and precision, Heritage will soon power a brighter future for the Empire State and show what’s possible when we match bold clean energy goals with determined execution.”

NYSERDA President and CEO Doreen M. Harris said, “Through our large-scale renewable program, and Apex Clean Energy’s commitment to renewable energy projects like Heritage Wind, New York is on a path to providing zero-emission electricity statewide. Additionally, public-private partnerships like those with Apex Clean Energy are bringing significant economic benefits to local communities, including job creation and delivering energy savings directly to residents—as seen in the Town of Barre.”

Heritage Wind, which will generate enough clean, homegrown energy to power approximately 32,000 homes, will also create nearly $30 million in new revenue for the Town of Barre over the project’s lifetime, plus $3.5 million each for the Albion School District and Orleans County. In addition, $1.2 million will go toward a local utility bill discount program that will save each Barre household an estimated $1,500 on their electric bill during the project’s first decade of operations. Heritage Wind will also stimulate local jobs during construction and operations, utilize the services of local businesses, and further advance New York’s growing renewable energy market.

The project is expected to begin commercial operations in 2026.
