Backing up a city’s sole source of power In Melilla, a Spanish city on the North African coast, reused LEAF batteries help provide stability and power to over 90,000 residents. Isolated from any national grid, the city and its residents entirely depend on a single thermal power plant operated by a subsidiary of multinational energy company Enel. If this plant were to go offline, the entire city would be left without electricity.
To strengthen the city’s energy resilience, Nissan partnered with Enel and measurement and control system specialist Loccioni on the “Second Life” project that utilizes used LEAF batteries. In the event of an outage, this storage facility can supply energy to the grid for 15 minutes, which is more than enough time to reset and restart operations. The backup power store can also store 4 MW of power, easing the load on the main plant while providing up to 1.7 MWh on its own.
Soufiane El Khomri, Director of Energy Services for the Nissan AMIEO (Africa, Middle-East, India, Europe and Oceania) region, explains: “At Nissan, we believe the future is electrified. Our collaboration with Enel allowed us to create a model for a battery’s second life, which supports energy resilience and opens up endless possibilities of reusing electric vehicle batteries as part of a circular economy.” . Saving energy at Nissan headquarters in America Second-life LEAF batteries are creating a more sustainable future at our U.S. headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee. Through the Battery Energy Storage Solution (BESS) project*, these retired batteries store energy during off-peak hours and supply it during peak demand, reducing carbon emissions and lowering energy costs at the Nissan Americas Headquarters.
“On any given day, we typically see two energy demand peaks, depending on the season,” says Chris Goddard, regional energy and environmental manager at Nissan. “This project uses second-life batteries to supply stored power during those times, complementing what the building draws from the grid.” The system includes batteries from about 50-60 LEAF vehicles and is expected to cut CO2 emissions by 3.7 tons annually. “It’s more than just technology—it’s about rethinking how we use resources to build a more sustainable future,” Goddard adds.. Nissan premieres all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybridNissan today debuted the all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid pickup truck at Auto Shanghai 2025. Alongside the Dongfeng Nissan N7, the all-new pickup represents the second of nine New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) Nissan plans to launch in China by summer 2027. The two new models showcase Nissan’s commitment to expanding segment coverage and revitalizing its lineup with technology-packed products that enhance competitiveness.
All-new Frontier Pro
When it goes on sale in China later this year, the all-new Frontier Pro will be Nissan’s first-ever plug-in Hybrid and Nissan’s first-ever electrified pickup truck.

It pairs Nissan’s decades-long pickup truck legacy and learnings with the latest powertrain technology from the world’s leading NEV market, China.
The five-seat, dual-purpose pickup has been designed for families who seek a vehicle that can comfortably and efficiently support their daily urban driving as well as weekend adventures beyond the city limits.
Design:
The all-new Frontier Pro was styled around the concept of “Rugged Tech” with a modern exterior design that complements a spacious and refined interior.
Within the front mask, the Nissan brand logo is illuminated in vibrant white, proudly signifying the Frontier Pro’s new era of electrified capability. Parallel to the hood line, five LED light elements, spaced apart, accentuate the width of the truck. The three central lights pay subtle homage to one of Nissan’s most iconic pickup trucks.
While styling the all-new Frontier Pro within Nissan’s Shanghai studio, members of the design team were inspired by the distinctive three-slot opening in the hood of the 1980s Nissan D21 hardbody pickup. In creating the Frontier Pro’s lighting signature, they leveraged LEDs to reimagine this design element for a new era.
All variants ride on standard 18-inch alloy wheels with 265/65R18 tires.Powertrain:

At its heart is a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain featuring a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine and a transmission-mounted, high output electric motor.
Combined, the system delivers over 300Kw of power and up to 800 newton meters of torque, offering a balance of performance and efficiency.
For the China domestic market, the Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid is targeted to deliver up to 135km* of EV-only range. All models feature a 5-link rear suspension and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive, which automatically controls torque distribution between the front and rear wheels.
Off-road capability is supported by the availability of an electromechanical rear differential lock. Four drive modes: ‘Hybrid, Pure electric, Performance and Snow’ allow the driver to tailor their experience to the conditions and their preferences. . Read Related News

The fine, which was imposed last year, covers not only a penalty but also illegally acquired profits, they said. Hyundai sold some 90,000 vehicles of its Kia and Hyundai brands in Germany, the exhaust systems of which were found to be manipulated so cars complied with nitrogen oxide limits during test conditions, but not on the road.

BYD SEALION 7 Gets Five-Star Euro NCAP Safety Rating BYD’s flagship SEALION 7 SUV has earned a maximum five-star safety rating in the latest round of tests by independent body Euro NCAP. The model, which was launched in Europe in late 2024 and features not only a Blade Battery but also BYD’s trademark Cell-to-Body construction, picked up the top rating with strong performances in all of the four key areas in Europe’s most stringent safety examination – Adult Occupant protection, Child Occupant protection, Vulnerable Road Users protection and Safety Assist.
The SEALION 7, which is available with a choice of battery sizes and power outputs, and incorporates the world’s fastest electric motor in mass production (23,000rpm), has picked up particularly strong scores in the two occupant areas of the test. Euro NCAP’s official report says that the car offered good whiplash protection in a crash, while noting good protection in the side barrier test and severe side pole impact evaluation. The Adult Occupant protection rating is 87%.
The Child Occupant protection rating is even more impressive, at 93%, equalling the highest percentage score in this category over the past nine years and reinforcing the SEALION 7’s positioning as a family car. The report states how, in the frontal offset and side barrier tests, the SEALION 7 scores maximum points for protection of all critical parts of the body for both the 10-year and six-year dummies. It also credits its direct child-presence detection system, which issues a warning when it detects that a child or infant has been left in the vehicle. Read More
