Porsche will not pursue the development plan for the Porsche Engineering Group’s Nardò Technical Center (NTC) in Apulia. Nardò Technical Center, Nardò, Italy, 2022, Porsche AG
Development plan for Nardò Technical Center will not be implemented
27/03/2025
Porsche will not pursue the development plan for the Porsche Engineering Group’s Nardò Technical Center (NTC) in Apulia.

In Apulia in southern Italy, the NTC is a central location for vehicle testing for Porsche and many other car manufacturers worldwide. A 12.6-kilometre-long circuit, a 6.2-kilometre-long handling course and many other facilities for testing the vehicles of tomorrow extend over 700 hectares.

In 2012, Porsche acquired NTC in Apulia. Today, NTC is an important part of Porsche Engineering’s integrated development and testing capabilities. Since then, the test site has been continuously modernized in order to further optimize the testing of future mobility technologies. NTC operates year-round and supports global customers in the automotive industry. Since 2023, a software unit in nearby Lecce has been expanding its technological competencies in southern Italy.

In order to expand its range of services, Porsche had recently presented a development plan for NTC. Now the company has decided not to proceed with the development plan. In March 2024, the Apulia Region decided to suspend the program agreement for the approval of the development plan, most recently until the end of March 2025. Read Related News

With a pilot project, Porsche aims to recover valuable raw materials from high-voltage batteries after their use in vehicles and to test a potential closed-loop raw material cycle. With this initiative, Porsche wants to addresses the growing importance of recycled battery raw materials and promote responsible handling of high-voltage batteries. In the long term, a recycling network for high-voltage batteries is planned to be established in collaboration with external partners. Step by step towards a circular economy
To test a process suitable for serial application, the pilot project is divided into three phases.

In the first project phase, high-voltage batteries from development vehicles are mechanically shredded at the end of their use-phase and processed into so-called “black mass.” The resulting granulate mixture contains valuable raw materials such as nickel, cobalt, manganese, and lithium. So far, around 65 tons of co-called “black mass” have been produced.

Subsequently, the “black mass” will be further refined and separated into the essential raw materials for high-voltage battery production. The quality and purity of the recycled materials are particularly important to Porsche in order to manufacture high-quality batteries for electric vehicles. In the third pilot phase, Porsche aims to produce high-voltage battery cells with a defined proportion of recycled materials and test their potential use in Porsche vehicles. The pilot project demonstrates Porsche’s holistic understanding of the circular economy: valuable raw materials from decommissioned high-voltage batteries are recovered, processed, and reused in new products. This can extend the lifecycle of selected resources and further reduce the environmental impact of battery production. . Read Related News
