.Daimler Buses has successfully completed the summer testing of the Mercedes‑Benz eIntouro. For a total of around five weeks, test personnel trialled the battery-electric inter-city bus at extreme temperatures of up to 45 degrees Celsius in Andalusia in southern Spain. The range of tests ranged from the performance of the electric drivetrain to the function of energy management and battery thermal management, as well as measurements during charging processes at rapid charging stations and the functionality of the air conditioning system in high heat. In addition to long and steep climbs in the mountains of the Sierra Nevada up to an altitude of 2,500 metres at full load, the test programme also included long descents using the electric continuous brake (recuperation). The test vehicles covered around 300 to 500 kilometres a day.
Results prove operational capability even at extreme temperatures
The extensive tests on the behaviour of the batteries and the electric drivetrain at very high outside temperatures did not just reveal important findings for further optimisation up to series production maturity. They also showed that the battery‑electric eIntouro is fully operational even in extreme summer conditions. The test team, strengthened by specialists from various development areas, also used the extensive tests for further adjustments to the control and regulation of the air conditioning and drive components as well as the charging components. Ahead of the Laver Cup 2025, Roger Federer and Mercedes-Benz are presenting the latest Neon Legacy project: in collaboration with the Laver Cup and the USTA Foundation, six public tennis courts in San Francisco’s John McLaren Park have been renovated and resurfaced. The new all-electric SUV is set to be unveiled towards the end of the year and will then be offered alongside the current combustion-engined and hybrid models. “This project was the first in which we moved directly from digital whole-vehicle testing to pre-series production,” explains Dr. Michael Steiner, Deputy Chairman and Member of the Executive Board Research and Development. The ‘construction’ stage of testing, which uses individually built prototypes, was no longer necessary as about 120 test vehicles, which are time consuming to build, were largely replaced by digital equivalents. Opel Drives Green Transformation of its Sites
The Opel site in Eisenach is becoming more sustainable: On its way to carbon-neutral production, the plant in Thuringia is receiving green electricity from a new photovoltaic system from now on. With an installed capacity of almost 20 megawatt peak (MWp) and an annual electricity production of 19 million kilowatt hours (kWh), the system enables a direct, sustainable energy supply to the plant in Eisenach..The 212,500 square metre photovoltaic system consists of almost 32,300 solar modules. On the road towards the port of Horgos in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, alongside the Lianyungang-Horgos Expressway, rows of vehicles can be seen neatly parked, awaiting export. Many of them will be driven out of the country by individual car drivers through a process known as “self-driving export.”
Horgos, which means “a place where camels pass” in Mongolian and “a place for accumulating wealth” in Kazakh, was once a bustling passage used by traders traveling along the ancient Silk Road. While it lost its shine after caravans faded into history, the Belt and Road Initiative, proposed by China in 2013, has revitalized the old port. Horgos has introduced “a fast-track customs clearance model” for self-driving vehicle exports.
In Horgos, a more flexible and cost-effective “self-driving export” has significantly facilitated the development of related businesses and continuously improved customs clearance efficiency since the agreement on mutual visa exemption between China and Kazakhstan went into force. Compared with truck transportation for exports, delivering vehicles via individual car drivers is more cost-efficient and is increasingly popular among foreign car importers. Thousands of people are engaged in this new way of car transportation in Horgos, turning ordinary drivers into important trade links and earning them the name “ferrymen.”
Ferrymen drive new vehicles to the customs supervision area at the Kazakh border, hand over the vehicles to foreign importers, and then take the return buses. The Worldwide Rig Count for August was 1,793, up 7 from the 1,786 counted in July 2025, and down 153, from the 1,946 counted in July 2024.
