National Grid and Emerald AI announced a strategic partnership to demonstrate how AI data centres can work with the transmission network to adjust their energy use in real time, making better use of existing capacity to support the UK’s growing digital needs.
The partners will deliver a live demonstration in the United Kingdom showcasing Emerald Conductor, an AI-powered system that acts as a smart mediator between the grid and a data centre, supporting flexible management of energy demand. Targeted for late 2025, the demonstration will use cutting-edge NVIDIA GPUs, dynamically adjust energy consumption, and support grid stability.
The electricity transmission network is designed with built-in redundancy to deliver world-class reliability and keep the lights on for customers. Capacity is typically available outside of peak events like hot summer days or cold winter storms, when there’s high demand for cooling and heating. That means, in many cases, there’s room on the existing grid to connect new data centres, if they can temporarily dial down energy usage during periods of peak demand. Read More

Eight leading manufacturers of truck trailers have filed an appeal to the European Court of Justice against key provisions of Regulation (EU) 2024/1610. The regulation introduces binding CO₂ reduction targets also for trailers – even though trailers themselves do not emit any CO₂. Whilst the companies fully support the EU´s climate goals, they warn against the consequences of a regulation detached from practical realities: Instead of reducing emissions, the Regulation could lead to increased traffic volumes and overall emissions. The group of eight companies had already filed an action for annulment before the General Court of the European Union, which dismissed the case on the grounds that there was no individual concern. The eight plaintiffs are predominantly medium-sized enterprises. Unlike large corporations, they do not have unlimited financial or technological resources to cushion regulatory burdens in the short term. For them, the Regulation poses an acute threat to their economic viability – with direct implications for thousands of jobs in the manufacturing and supplier industries. The manufacturers particularly criticize the use of the VECTO-Trailer model. It positively rates theoretical improvements to trailers – such as reduced height or lower weight – without considering real-world transport implications. In practice, these measures reduce loading volume, lead to more empty runs and increase traffic, ultimately resulting in higher CO₂ emissions. Read More

Scania launches new combustion and plug-in hybrid powertrains for buses and coaches
Scania’s new powertrain platform, based on the Super truck engine, comes in internal combustion and plug-in hybrid configurations for buses and coaches to meet varying needs and requirements, enabling significantly reduced fuel consumption and zero-emission zone compliance for long-distance operators.
