Global Energy/Automotive news, commentary and analysis

London, April 11, 2025 (Oilandgaspress) –-(Reuters) – Oil-dependent governments are coming under pressure from the lowest crude prices since the COVID-19 pandemic, with officials preparing policy responses for a drop in revenue such as issuing more debt and reducing spending.

Brent crude plunged more than 15% in the days following U.S. President Donald Trump’s aggressive tariffs, as the escalating trade war between the U.S. and China spurred worries about recession and energy demand. The same week, the OPEC+ cartel put forward a plan to increase supply next month. Brent sank below $60 a barrel, falling to the lowest level since February 2021. Other producer countries are planning to plug their shortfalls with debt. Kuwait passed a law last month to allow its government to tap international debt markets for the first time since 2017. The country’s finance minister Noora Al-Fassam said it was important to improve the flexibility of public finances. Saudi Arabia has also leaned on bond markets in recent years to finance the spending boom it has embarked on to diversify its economy. The kingdom faces mounting pressure to cut spending after the plunge in crude prices, complicating the ambitious plans to build out megaprojects such as the Neom City. The International Monetary Fund estimates that Riyadh needs oil prices of over $90 a barrel to balance its budget. Read Related News

Bentley Motors is marking 25 years of Additive Manufacturing (AM) – widely known as 3D printing – at its headquarters in Crewe, having invested significantly into its facility and technologies in recent years. The journey, which began with a commitment to in-house 3D printing to support the development of Bentley’s first generation Continental GT, has evolved into a state-of-the-art facility that’s home to 13 machines operating six cutting-edge technologies.

Originally housed in the oldest building at the Pyms Lane site, A1 – which is now being transformed into the future assembly line for Bentley’s first BEV – the 3D printing facility has been relocated into the company’s new Engineering Technical Centre, reinforcing Bentley’s position at the forefront of innovation in advanced product development and manufacturing techniques.

Bentley’s Additive Manufacturing facility leverages a diverse range of advanced technologies, each offering unique printing capabilities that support the entire development and production lifecycle across multiple business areas.

A recent industry first example was on ‘The Black Rose’, a special customer commission, and one of only three right-hand-drive Baturs. The first ever expression of three dimensional printed solid rose gold was used, adding up to 210 grams of hallmarked 18-karat rose gold to the interior of the coachbuilt coupe at key driver touchpoints. The AM facility enables optimal material and process selection for every application. From large, functional components produced through Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM) to aerodynamic test models created by Multi-Jet Fusion (MJF) technologies. The team has even 3D printed a W12 engine block scaled down to just 5 mm wide that still retains every detail of the engine thanks to a Lithography-based Metal Manufacturing (LMM) technology – a pioneering approach to 3D metal printing that delivers industry-leading precision. These technologies support everything from scale models and rapid prototyping, to ‘single-print’ parts and bespoke tooling solutions that not only accelerate the product development process, but make it more sustainable through reducing waste materials. . How Porsche reconditions defective vehicle components
With the ‘remanufacturing’ approach, defective vehicle components are to be reconditioned into functional spare parts so that their reusability can already be taken into account during vehicle development. With a ‘cross-departmental pilot project’, Porsche wants to further expand its existing processes in the area of remanufacturing defective components from Porsche vehicles and thus also make a contribution to sustainability. By refurbishing defective components into functional ‘as-good-as-new’ spare parts, the aim is to help conserve resources during the product life cycle.

Remanufacturing is to be integrated into Porsche’s development processes for vehicle projects in order to take specific requirements for the reusability of selected components into account as early as the product development process. In this way, Porsche aims not only to promote closed-loop concepts along the value chain of its vehicles, but also to contribute to the resource-conserving use of spare parts.

Reconditioning of components implemented in previous and current vehicle projects
Selected defective components from various vehicle model series are already being given a second life through targeted remanufacturing. Around 20 component groups are currently being remanufactured – including gearboxes, navigation computers, starters and alternators, for example. The following applies: the remanufactured component must meet the same quality and safety standards as a comparable new part. Defective components for which a reconditioning process exists are specifically requested by dealers worldwide and stored centrally in Porsche’s own spare parts warehouse in Sachsenheim. From there, the parts are transferred to specialised reconditioning plants – often the original manufacturers of the components – where they undergo careful cleaning, disassembly and comprehensive testing. Individual parts that can no longer be used are replaced with new parts, while fully functional parts are reused. After professional reassembly, the reconditioned components undergo the same quality and safety tests as newly produced spare parts. They are then offered back to Porsche dealers.

Proactive remanufacturing is to become an integral part of vehicle development
Porsche is continuously working on increasing the proportion of vehicle components suitable for remanufacturing. Further component groups with significant potential for a remanufacturing process have now been identified. These include components such as headlights, electric drives for rear spoilers or charging flaps and other electronic control units. . Read Related News

Natural gas is helping power the use of artificial intelligence
.Most of us interface with artificial intelligence (AI) in countless ways every day. AI is not only key to many digital experiences (from text editing to online shopping to gaming), but also an important part of many industries, including health care and transportation.

As the use of AI grows, so does the need for energy to power data centers. These facilities are so energy intensive that, by one estimate, they could consume as much as 9% of all energy generated in the U.S. by 2030. Meeting this demand will require an abundant supply of reliable energy that is available 24/7.

In the U.S.—which supplies approximately one-quarter of the world’s natural gas—natural gas is helping to power that need. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), data centers are among the most energy-intensive building types. Right now, they account for approximately 2% of total electricity use in the U.S.—and that figure is expected to grow. Data centers require so much energy because they involve running and cooling thousands of servers around the clock. These facilities consume 10 to 50 times the amount of energy per square foot of a typical commercial office building, DOE data indicates. Right now, these centers are pulling energy from the electrical grid, causing issues during peak demand and straining the system due to their high energy consumption. Read Related News
