London, December 17, 2024 (Oilandgaspress) –- lanway Logística, a logistics provider based in Orense, Spain, added 22 FUSO eCanter to its fleet: All vehicles are operating from now on as part of the distribution fleet of Correos, the postal service provider of Spain.

The battery-electric 8.55 t light-duty trucks with a 4,450 mm wheelbase come with a 129 kW electric motor and the L-size battery pack with a range of up to 200 km with one battery charge.

The vehicle combines compact dimensions and great maneuverability with a high load volume, which makes it the ideal vehicle for inner-city distribution and postal deliveries in urban areas.

“The fact that Planway Logistika, another major logistics company, has opted for the Next Generation eCanter shows once again that the all-electric light-duty truck is ideal for inner-city distribution traffic.”, summarizes Florian Schulz, Head of Sales, Marketing & Customer Services FUSO Europe. “By ordering 22 units, the customer is also underlining his commitment to electrify his last-mile transports. The eCanter’s charging flexibility as well as its comparatively high payload and the load volume of 15 euro-pallets makes this transition quite easy.” Read More

Mercedes-Benz has updated its conditionally automated driving system DRIVE PILOT and has now received the approval by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority. With this milestone all is set for the upcoming sales release in early 2025 in Germany. This update makes DRIVE PILOT the fastest certified system for conditionally automated driving (SAE‑Level 3[1]) in a standard production vehicle. It’s optionally available on two luxury saloon car ranges – S-Class and EQS. The price of DRIVE PILOT remains unchanged (starting at 5,950 euros incl. VAT). Cars with DRIVE PILOT, that have been already built, get the update for free – either via the internet (Over-the-Air-Update) or during a visit at the workshop. There is no need to change any vehicle components for the software update..The development at Mercedes‑Benz goes on with the goal to offer customers even more: higher speeds, longer driving times without intervention by the driver and even more comfort and safety. Road traffic will get safer the more automated driving vehicles populate the roads. Currently, the legally allowed top speed for conditionally automated driving in Germany is 130 km/h. Mercedes‑Benz wants to achieve this speed range by the end of this decade. Read More

electric car

With the Met Office’s long-term forecast projecting potential snow and low temperatures over the Christmas period across much of England, electric car owners will need to take extra care. Auto Trader’s Editorial Director Erin Baker shared some tips with the Daily Express on how to minimise this loss of range during colder weather. As manufacturers and drivers worldwide navigate the shift to electric vehicles, learning to adapt to different conditions is key.

To maximise your electric car’s mileage, Erin suggests: “Keep your electric car in a garage or enclosed parking space, or even just under a cover, as this can help keep the car and its battery warmer. The warmer it is, the more likely it is to hold its charge.” She also advises preheating the car and its battery, and adopting efficient driving techniques such as slower speeds and avoiding hard braking or acceleration. NLR and zepp join forces for liquid hydrogen-powered flight
The Netherlands Aerospace Centre (NLR) is taking a major step towards flying on liquid hydrogen, a promising development to make aviation more sustainable. To make this possible, the research institute has signed an agreement with zepp.solutions, a leading Dutch hydrogen fuel cell systems provider, to develop a fuel cell system. This collaboration is a key pillar in NLR’s ambition to conduct a demo flight in 2026.

To enable this manned flight on liquid hydrogen in 2026, NLR will equip its electric-powered research aircraft, the Pipistrel Velis Electro, with a hydrogen powertrain. A crucial element is the fuel cell system, which Zepp.solutions will develop in close cooperation with the research institute.

Joint focus
This agreement is a major contribution to NLR’s ‘Climate Neutral Aviation’ programme, which focuses on the development of innovative and sustainable technologies with the aim of making aviation climate-neutral by 2050 at the latest.

The new collaboration between NLR and Zepp expresses a joint focus to take concrete steps towards sustainable aviation within the Dutch ecosystem. In doing so, Zepp has the ambition to develop fuel cell systems for aviation and can make a clear contribution with this collaboration. As a launching customer in this sector, NLR offers Zepp the opportunity to demonstrate and further develop its technology in the aviation sector. The system that Zepp will develop will be integrated into the Pipistrel. This small electrically powered aircraft offers NLR the opportunity to demonstrate innovative technologies.

Demo flight
Arjen Kloosterman, NLR project leader: “‘NLR aims to use this project to gain knowledge and experience in the development and integration of hydrogen components and powertrains for manned aviation. Besides physical integration, the biggest challenges are the airworthiness and safety aspects associated with introducing hydrogen onboard an aircraft. The entire trajectory up to the demo flight in 2026 provides us with valuable knowledge and insights for hydrogen technology integration and is thus a prelude to further developments and implementation of this technology in the aviation sector. The collaboration with Zepp is an essential step for us and will significantly contribute to NLR’s Climate Neutral Aviation programme.”

Jan Bot, co-founder of zepp.solutions, concurs. “Our fuel cell technology has already proven itself in various sectors. We bring a lot of knowledge and experience when it comes to developing efficient and compact fuel cell systems. However, aviation offers completely different challenges. This cooperation, and to be able to learn from each other in this way, is therefore incredibly valuable. In developing the hydrogen system for the Pipistrel, together with NLR, we will not only demonstrate the potential of hydrogen in aviation but also learn lessons that can be of great value to this sector.” Read More

From Switzerland comes a new technology that aims to decarbonize the transportation methods we use right now.

Through a thermochemical process driven 100% by solar power, the energy startup Synhelion can synthesize gasoline, diesel, kerosene, or any other fossil fuel currently in use.

Their colloquially termed ‘solar fuels’ are carbon neutral, as they emit only as much CO2 as was used in their production, compared to fossil fuels that come from deep underground and add to the global carbon cycle.

The technology that powers the DAWN solar fuel plant pictured above relies on concentrated solar radiation reflected from a bank of mirrors into a receiver that creates temperatures as high as 1,500C°. This not only powers the production of fuels through synthesizing H20 and CO2, but also is fed into a storage system that powers the production after dark. Read More
