Idemitsu and Toyota to collaborate on mass production of solid-state batteries for battery EVs

London, 13 October 2023, (Oilandgaspress) – Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and Toyota Motor Corporation are developing a solid electrolyte solution for the mass production of all-solid-state batteries, a promising next-generation battery for battery EVs (hereinafter referred to as BEVs). Today, we decided and agreed that both companies will work together to develop mass production technology, improve productivity, and build a supply chain. By collaborating with the two companies, who are world leaders * in the development of all-solid-state battery materials , we will ensure the commercialization of all-solid-state batteries in 2027-2028 (announced at the Toyota Technical Workshop in June 2023 ), and after that. We are aiming for full-scale mass production.

Towards carbon neutrality, Idemitsu is one step ahead in implementing energy and materials in society, and Toyota is working on the development of BEVs, which is an important option, based on the concept of multi-pathways. Since 2001, Idemitsu and Toyota have been working on research and development of elemental technology for all-solid-state batteries, which are one of the options for next-generation batteries that support the evolution of BEVs, and Toyota since 2006.

This collaboration targets sulfide-based solid electrolytes, which are said to be able to easily exhibit high capacity and high output for BEVs. This sulfide solid electrolyte is soft and easily adheres to other materials, making it easy to mass produce batteries.

In preparation for full-scale mass production, the two companies will establish a task force of several dozen people and will collaborate as follows.
