IEA’s Monthly Electricity Statistics report
The latest IEA’s Monthly Electricity Statistics report including September 2021 data shows that for Total OECD:
In the OECD, total net electricity production was 864.3 TWh in September 2021, down by 10.3% compared to August 2021 and up by 2.0% compared to September 2020. From January to September 2021, total net electricity power production was 8031.6 TWh, up by 2.9% compared to the same period in 2020.
Total renewable electricity production was 246.8 TWh in September 2021, down by 8.7% compared to August 2021 and up by 1.4% compared to September 2020. Hydropower had the largest influence on the decrease in renewable production, at 106.6 TWh in September 2021; it was down by 13.0% compared to August 2021 and down by 5.0% compared to September 2020. Conventional thermal production was 493.8 TWh in September 2021, down by 12.5% compared to August 2021 and up by 0.8% compared to September 2020. Natural gas production was 266.1 TWh in September 2021, down by 12.3% compared to August 2021 and down by 4.1% compared to September 2020. Since July 2021, natural gas power production was lower than during the same months in 2020 because of higher gas prices.
Highlight of the month:
In France, in a context of high natural gas prices, power production from natural gas remained low in September 2021, at 1.5 GWh, 39.3% lower than in September 2020. In the third quarter of 2021, natural gas power output was 3.9 TWh, 45.6% lower than in the third quarter of 2020. To compensate for this drop in production, coal power output was higher in September 2021, at 1.1 TWh, up 194.5% compared to August 2021 and 71.7% compared to September 2020. In the first three quarters of 2021, coal power production was 6.0 TWh, up by 97.7% compared to the same period in 2020.
