Marjan van Loon is resigning as CEO of Shell Nederland as of April 1

Frans Everts will succeed her. Frans Everts will succeed Marjan van Loon as president-directeur for Shell Nederland as of April 1, 2023. Van Loon has led Shell Nederland since January 1, 2016. “We are very grateful to Marjan van Loon”, says Shell’s CEO Wael Sawan. “Under her leadership, we have laid a solid foundation for our transition to cleaner energy in The Netherlands.”

Born in Groningen in 1965, Everts studied business economics at the University of Groningen and has worked for Shell in various roles in the past 33 years. Everts led Shell Energy in North America and held strategic and commercial roles in Italy and the United Kingdom. From 2001 to 2004, he led Shell Nederland Verkoop Maatschappij, known for its retail stations. In his current position as executive vice-president for Corporate Relations, Everts’ responsibilities include Shell’s global communications.

Climate agreement
Under Marjan van Loon, Shell was the first major company to support the Dutch Climate Agreement and has taken investment decisions of around 6.5 billion euros in the Dutch energy transition. For example, Shell started the construction of a biofuels plant at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, decided to build Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant in Rotterdam, innovates with circular plastics and installed fast chargers for electric vehicles throughout the Netherlands. Shell Technology Center Amsterdam transformed into the open Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam in 2022 and Shell recently won the permit for the construction of its fourth offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea.

Marjan van Loon said: “I am really very proud of what we have achieved in the Netherlands in the past years. We have supplied the country with energy every day without fail, increasingly focusing on cleaner energy. After seven years, I’m pleased to hand over to Frans. With his experience and background, he is excellently placed to continue our work. I wish him every success in this fantastic role. It is my hope that the Netherlands will further embrace our solutions in the energy transition under his lead.” Van Loon will step down from April 1 and leave Group service thereafter, after 34 years of employment.

Frans Everts aims to build on the foundation laid under Van Loon, in a way that is commercially attractive for Shell. “We play a leading role in the Dutch energy transition. We have the knowledge and expertise to develop and invest in solutions. But we can’t do it alone. Together with partners, we want to make cleaner energy accessible to the entire country. Of course, there are also challenges. I will approach these with an open mind, in line with Marjan van Loon’s broad view and transparent way of communicating.” Read More
