Biocom California Names Representative Scott Peters its 2022 Sustainability Champion

SAN FRANCISCO & LOS ANGELES & SAN DIEGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Biocom California, the association representing the California life science industry, today presented U.S. Representative Scott Peters (CA-52) with its 2022 Sustainability Champion Award.

Biocom California’s Sustainability Champion Award honors elected officials for their support of policies protecting and advancing the environmental, economic and social conditions that improve productivity and the stewardship of natural resources to accommodate the needs of present and future generations.

“On behalf of our California life science community, it is my great pleasure to recognize Congressman Peters as this year’s Sustainability Champion for his leadership in Congress addressing some of California and the planet’s most pressing challenges from drought and wildfires to greenhouse gas emissions and energy reliability,” said Joe Panetta, president and CEO of Biocom California. “Rep. Peters’ district is also home to multiple advanced-stage renewable energy and biobased companies.”

Rep. Peters authored the POWER On Act to deploy renewable energy by expanding the interstate transmission of electricity and the USE IT Act to develop and advance carbon capture technologies, as well as cosponsored two bills to provide grants to harden the electric grid against extreme weather – including wildfires – and to update the federal government’s comprehensive approach to fight wildfires, all of which passed as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“As San Diego’s life sciences community knows, tackling our climate crisis requires more than pithy slogans. Saving the planet requires real, pragmatic solutions, based on data, steeped in science, and that’s been my focus in Congress,” said Rep. Peters. “I appreciate the partnership I’ve built with Biocom California and its members who are forging the discoveries of tomorrow and thank them for this honor.”

Rep. Peters also led congressional efforts to reduce methane emissions in the U.S. by introducing the METHANE Act and a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act to reinstate rules that set stronger regulations on methane pollution. He is the co-author of bills to prioritize carbon removal as a solution to our climate challenges and to streamline the federal response to climate hazards. Lastly, he is the co-founder and co-chair of the Algae Caucus and an active member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
