KBR (NYSE: KBR) was selected to continue providing high-end astronaut medical support services for the European Space Agency’s (ESA’s) European Astronaut Centre (EAC) Space Medicine Office in Cologne, Germany.

Under the terms of the recompete contract, KBR will be the primary provider of space medicine support services to ESA, which is introducing a new service model. This work is scheduled to be performed over a three-and-a-half-year period.

A partner to ESA for more than 20 years, KBR’s major activities include astronaut medical care, engineering support, rehabilitation, fitness, project management, healthcare administration, psychology and behavioral health, nutrition, radiation, education coordination, and operational research.

“Every opportunity to work with ESA and our coordinating commercial and government space partners adds to the future of space exploration while highlighting its many positive beand globalizing our space expertise,” said Byron Bright, KBR Government Solutions President.

Throughout KBR’s many years of support to ESA, it has aided more than 15 launch and landing campaigns in Russia and Kazakhstan, as well as 20 missions to the ISS in a variety of visiting vehicles. KBR’s partnership has also influenced millions in research funding for space medicine operations and led to the establishment of the ESA Space Health International Network for Exploration (SHINE). The exploration of airborne transportation and advanced air mobility (AAM) is the focus of a new partnership between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Supernal—an advanced air mobility company from Hyundai Motor Group. Supernal is developing electric, autonomous air vehicles capable of accommodating four to five passengers with the intent to launch commercial flights as early as 2028. These electronic vertical takeoff and landing vehicles (eVTOL) will integrate with existing transportation networks and move passengers more quickly around high-density city centers—saving people time and offering more transit options.The new project will take a holistic look at AAM, concentrating on the feasibility, opportunities, and challenges of building eVTOL stations—known as vertiports—for future autonomous air vehicles. Catalyst Plugging Mechanism
Hydrogen reforming is a process to produce hydrogen from a compound composed of hydrogen atoms. During reforming, a convection pass is used to heat the process which creates NOx. The NOx rich flue gas passes through an SCR reactor for reduction before being exhausted to the atmosphere. Lint-like fibres from the convection pass, and refractory liners create an obstruction that builds up and fouls the face of the SCR catalyst.

Buildup Costs Millions

The result is decreased NOx reduction, higher pressure drop across the catalyst, and ultimately decreased hydrogen output. Often, this buildup will require an unscheduled outage to manually conduct cleaning. This outage can take as long as five days at an estimated cost of $1 million per day. Read More
