Omnia Midstream Selected by the DOE for Funding Delaware Basin CO2 Sequestration Hub

TULSA, Okla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Omnia Midstream Partners has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to advance a large-scale carbon storage feasibility study in the Delaware Basin located in West Texas. Omnia’s Permian Regional Carbon Storage (PRCS Hub) project was selected under the Carbon Storage Assurance Facility Enterprise (CarbonSAFE) Initiative by the DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management. The PRCS Hub project emphasizes Omnia’s commitment to developing a comprehensive solution to regional carbon management in collaboration with New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the University of Texas Permian Basin, Texas Tech University, the University of Houston, the University of Utah, and other esteemed research laboratories.

“I’m thrilled to partner with prominent experts who specialize in initiatives aimed at decreasing carbon emissions, such as Carbon Capture and Sequestration. Our team will continue to develop a commercial, multi-source, large-scale carbon capture and storage hub in the Permian,” states Chad Cagle one of Omnia’s Founding Partners and Principal Investigator for the project. The Omnia PRCS project was selected for negotiation as one of the sixteen projects chosen by the DOE under the CarbonSAFE initiative to help fight climate change by strengthening the nation’s carbon management.

The PRCS Hub project will strategically address carbon dioxide (CO2) storage needs in one of the most prolific oil and gas basins in the United States. The PRCS Hub project will establish a network of CO2 emitters, CO2 pipelines, and Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) solutions throughout the basin. These project initiatives will facilitate responsible production increases in the area, positively affecting the local economy by creating jobs and generating revenue for communities in West Texas and Southeastern New Mexico.

The PRCS Hub project will complete the detailed site characterization, planning, and permitting necessary to eventually store up to 100 million metric tons of CO2. Ryan Dupree, Omnia’s Lead Geologist, expresses, “Significant groundwork has been conducted in modeling and comprehending formations in the region. This funding will help us to complete that picture and provide a clear sequestration strategy for the basin. Utilizing extensive historical geology, we can enhance the assessment of storage feasibility. The collaborative efforts of our partners bolster our confidence in the positive outcomes of this project.”

Omnia plans to capture opportunities arising from the robust growth in Delaware Basin activities by engaging in targeted business development efforts with key basin operators. The PRCS Hub project has identified multiple suitable storage sites that will be connected to emitters through a network of CO2 pipelines. The implementation of a dependable CCS solution will also support the development of large-scale gas-fired power plants to supply clean electricity to West Texas communities and growing oil and gas operations for years to come.
