Deglobalization is the process of decreasing the interdependence between countries, particularly in terms of trade and investment. It can involve actions like raising tariffs, reducing foreign investment, and limiting the movement of people. A decades-long process of globalisation is coming to an end as the world becomes more protectionist*, favoring opportunities closer to home. Multinational corporations are diversifying where they produce goods and relocating closer to home. Geopolitical tensions between the US and China have intensified under US President, Donald Trump.

How China has been allowed to takeover Britain’s energy industry in the name of Ed Miliband’s Net Zero dream. In January last year, a few months after the Michigan revolt, a solar energy storage plant began operations in Thanet, Kent, equipped with lithium batteries supplied by a Chinese factory belonging to that very same CCP-linked firm, Gotion.

Its power storage systems were provided by another Chinese company, Shanghai Electric, and its opening marked the completion of an impressive UK solar portfolio for the firm, including projects in Lincolnshire, Devon, Winchester, Essex, Norfolk, Scunthorpe and Grimsby. the UK has gone with a begging bowl to Beijing as Ed Miliband seeks its aid to propel our transition to ‘a net-zero future’ and we’ve increasingly become a dumping ground for cheap Chinese green-technology goods.

Opaque supply chains and company structures have hampered the task of assessing the scale of our predicament.

Today, however, a Daily Mail investigation reveals the true extent of the Chinese chokehold on the UK renewables sector.

In a comprehensive audit of Beijing’s creeping infiltration of our energy industry, this newspaper has found Chinese firms are now linked to around a third of all offshore wind projects in the UK, worth a total of £56 billion.

And, in an ominous sign for our national security, four of the companies have been placed on a Pentagon blacklist for allegedly working with the Chinese military.

Meanwhile, at least half a dozen Beijing-backed firms singled out for their links to human rights abuses have extensive solar power portfolios in Britain. . Read More

British Gas has used National Apprenticeship Week to announce it will have more than 400 apprenticeship roles available in 2025 to help accelerate the drive to net zero.

The new apprentices will be helping customers with energy efficiency advice, fixing boilers and installing net zero measures to help customers save on bills and reduce their carbon emissions. British Gas is aiming to attract more women into these roles to close the gender gap in engineering as well as people from underrepresented backgrounds. Training will take place at the Ofsted regulated and award winning British Gas Academies.

It comes as new research by the company reveals a major shift in attitudes towards apprenticeships, challenging long-standing views on career and education choices. The research shows over half (55%) of UK adults said their view of apprenticeships has improved since they finished school, while only 2% report a negative shift. Additionally, nearly a quarter (23%) would now consider an apprenticeship to change careers, marking a shift in how we view work, training, and future prospects. When it comes to the reasons why, nearly three-quarters agreed apprenticeships offer a route to long-term job security, and two-thirds see them as means to build essential skills. Avoiding student debt (55%) and faster career progression than university (51%) also rank as key advantages. Read More

British Gas has partnered with sustainable cloud computing provider, heata, on an innovative trial to explore how harnessing waste heat generated by computer servers can save households money on their bills.

heata’s innovative model distributes cloud computing workloads to servers in homes. In a data centre, the heat generated during processing is a waste product, and energy-intensive cooling systems are required to stop the servers from overheating.

To overcome this, heata has created a ‘virtual data centre’ – a network of servers distributed in people’s homes. Each server is attached to the home’s hot water cylinder, and as they process data, the heat they generate is transferred into the water. This reduces the energy needed to heat water in the home, and as this is typically provided by gas boilers, it reduces the amount of gas used, lowering the carbon impact as a result. heata pays for the electricity the heata unit uses, which means the household pays less to heat their hot water. As part of a three-month trial, 10 heata units will be installed in the homes of British Gas employees, and the energy provider’s computing workloads will be processed on these units. As a result British Gas will be providing free hot water for its own employees as a byproduct of their own cloud compute.

The trial will provide feedback around performance and customer experience, as well as demonstrating the associated CO2 and energy cost savings to further co-develop customer propositions in 2025.

According to heata, the devices can provide up to 4kWh of hot water per day, with the technology expected to save households up to £340 per year when offsetting electrically heated hot water, and up to £120 when offsetting gas heated hot water. Read More

Jeddah is hosting the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship this weekend for the third and fourth races of Season 11. And history will also record that it was in Saudi Arabia’s second-largest city that Maximilian Günther clinched his first victory with DS Automobiles on Friday night! Starting from pole position, the German driver secured a dramatic win by reclaiming the lead in the final chicane, just a few hundred metres from the finish line.

The intensity of the battle between the electric single-seaters was evident recently right from qualifying, with eight different teams making it to the final stage. While Jean-Éric Vergne finished fifth in his group, missing out on a qualifying spot by less than a tenth of a second, Maximilian Günther put together a flawless run to the final, securing his first pole position with DS Automobiles—the 25th for the premium French manufacturer.

When the lights went out, Max maintained a front-running position until mid-race, when all competitors took their turns for the all-new PIT BOOST. This ultra-fast recharge is a new feature in Formula E this season: a 600 kW charge for 30 seconds allows the cars to take on an extra 3.85 kWh, adding 10% more energy. This is yet another example of how the FIA and Formula E continue to push the development of electric mobility on every level.

Despite losing a few positions during his pit stop, Maximilian Günther quickly fought back, closing the gap to leader and overtaking him just a few hundred metres before the finish. In addition to taking pole position and the victory, the new DS Automobiles driver also set the fastest lap of the race, confirming both his dominance and that of the DS E-TENSE FE25 in Saudi Arabia. As a result, he scored the maximum 29 points and moved up to third place in the World Championship standings.

Starting from 10th on the grid, Jean-Éric Vergne also delivered a solid race. The Frenchman climbed up to sixth place, scoring points for the third time in as many races. The combined performances of both drivers helped DS PENSKE to reclaim second place in the Teams’ standings.

The fourth race of the season is scheduled for Saturday at 20:00 local time (18:00 CET). The DS Automobiles drivers will be aiming for another strong performance in this second showdown of the weekend! Read More

New study suggests that electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t as environmentally friendly as they might appear.

Researchers from the University of Southampton found that certain common brake pads produce emissions even more toxic than diesel exhaust fumes. These particles are 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair and are capable of slipping through the airways deep into the lungs’ most sensitive tissues.

So, although EVs don’t release any gases from their exhaust, they can still contribute to deadly air pollution.

The researchers warn that this ‘non-exhaust pollution’ is now responsible for the majority of vehicle emissions in Europe. Read More

Africa is a major oil-producing region and is home to some 12% of the world’s reserves.

The oil industry helps to drive economic development on the continent, contributing substantially to GDP, government revenues, and foreign exchange earnings.

Nigeria is Africa’s biggest oil producer, with reserves primarily located in the Niger Delta.

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man, has invested a whopping £16billion in building one of the world’s largest oil refineries in Nigeria.

Construction began in 2016 and was completed seven years later in May 2023.
Located in the Lekki Free Zone outside of Lagos, the plant has a size almost the equivalent of 4,000 football fields.

Once fully operational, it should be able to produce 650,000 barrels per day.

Dangote Industries Ltd said on Monday that the target should be achieved in roughly 30 days’ time. Read More

Porsche will cut 1,900 posts by the end of the decade as its profit margins are hit by rocky market conditions. The cuts will see a reduction in overall staffing numbers by 15% by 2029 at its main sites in southwestern Germany, Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and Weissach. Employees will be encouraged to leave voluntarily by accepting early retirement or severance packages, and Porsche will take a “restrictive approach” to hiring, the firm confirmed this week. The carmaker blamed the job losses on “the delayed ramp-up of electromobility” and “challenging geopolitical and economic conditions”. Read More
