Safety Management Group To Present on Manhole Safety At 2022 Jodie Lane National Conference

VP of Utilities to Share Latest IEEE Guidelines on Manhole Safety at Virtual Utility Public Safety Conference

INDIANAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#environmentalservicesSafety Management Group (SMG), an industry-leading safety, environmental, and health services firm, announced that Stu Hanebuth, SMG’s Vice President of Utilities and VERO, will present on manhole safety at the 2022 Jodie Lane National Conference hosted by Electric Power Research Institute today from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET.

Hanebuth served as the Vice Chair of the Insulated Conductors Committee (ICC) Working Group for Manhole Events and contributed to the development of the IEEE 2417, Guide for Early Detection, Mitigation, Preventative Measures, and Response to Smoke, Fire, and Explosions in Underground Electrical Structures. This is the first peer-reviewed IEEE guide that outlines how utilities can prevent manhole events and improve the safety of utility workers.

“This annual conference focuses on the life-preserving work of utility public safety in the name of Jodie Lane, who died in 2004 while walking her dogs in New York City when she was electrocuted by stray voltage on a snow-covered Con Edison junction box,” said Hanebuth. “The IEEE 2417 Guide provides concrete directions to improve safety in and around manholes, which protects not only utility workers but also the public, who also live and work around utility equipment. I look forward to sharing this long-awaited document created by a group of concerned utility safety experts.”

The 2022 Jodie Lane National Conference is the industry’s most comprehensive event focused on contact voltage, manhole events and other public safety issues. The virtual event features representatives from leading utilities and from the industry discussing their unique perspectives related to critical manhole safety topics. Attendees and presenters have the opportunity to exchange ideas on testing and maintenance practices, program results, investment plans, and R&D initiatives.
