Stryten Energy Awarded DOE MAKE IT Prize Phase 2 Funding

Stryten’s Securing America’s Vanadium Electrolyte Supply (SAVES) project will help rapidly scale the US-based production and commercialization of cost-effective vanadium redox flow battery electrolyte

ALPHARETTA, Ga.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#EnergyToChallenge–Stryten Energy LLC, a U.S.-based energy storage solutions provider, has received a Phase 2 award from the U.S. Department of Energy through the MAKE IT Prize Facilities Track to build a domestic vanadium electrolyte manufacturing plant to support long-duration energy storage.

The Manufacture of Advanced Key Energy Infrastructure Technologies (MAKE IT) Prize Facilities Track was developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Technology Transitions (OTT) in partnership with its Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) and is administered by DOE’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The prize is part of DOE’s American-Made program, where competitors demonstrated their readiness for the construction of a manufacturing facility including proof of location, permits, financing, and community engagement. Phase 2 winning teams were awarded $4.5 million each, bringing their total prize winnings to $5 million per team.

The Securing America’s Vanadium Electrolyte Supply (SAVES) project will deploy Stryten’s proprietary reactor design to provide domestically produced, low-cost electrolyte. Vanadium electrolyte is costly, and this component typically constitutes 40 to 60 percent of the overall system cost, representing a key cost reduction to help rapidly scale the U.S.-based production and commercialization of vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). Building a cost-effective domestic supply chain for vanadium electrolyte presents a transformational opportunity to rapidly grow adoption of this technology and secure leadership for the U.S. in this critical infrastructure application.

“We are excited to win the MAKE IT Prize Facilities Track award for our plan to stand up a manufacturing plant in Georgia,” said Scott Childers, Vice President of Essential Power for Stryten Energy. “This award will enable us to accelerate the manufacturing of vanadium electrolyte and will establish the vertically integrated domestic supply chain needed to meet the growing demand for VRFBs in long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications.”

The energy sector is rapidly evolving to meet the growing demand for clean energy, which creates an opportunity to invest in the U.S. manufacturing base and strengthen the country’s energy supply chains. Resilient, secure, and diverse supply chains and domestic manufacturing capabilities will help maximize the benefits of federal investments in climate and clean energy and provide economic opportunity for all Americans.

VRFB technology is ideally suited to provide long-duration energy storage greater than 4 hours to help ensure grid stability and facilitate increased utilization of renewables for businesses and consumers across the U.S. With proper maintenance, VRFBs can last more than 20 years without its electrolyte losing storage capacity. This longevity complements the lifespan of wind and solar installations. The electrolyte itself is infinitely recyclable, and the battery offers a near-limitless cycle life. These systems are also independently scalable in power and capacity. This scalability has the potential for substantial cost reduction when discharge time goes up, making VRFB the preferred option for large-scale energy storage.
