TotalEnergies to invest in La Mède biorefinery in 2024

London, 28 June, 2023, (Oilandgaspress) TotalEnergies is accelerating the transformation of its La Mède biorefinery (Bouches-du-Rhône) and will invest €70 million in 2024 in order to have the capacity to process up to 100% waste from circular economy to produce biofuels.

The investment, planned as part of the biorefinery’s first major shutdown in 2024, will modernize the site’s facilities so that it can process more used cooking oils and animal fats. Since 2019, the La Mède platform, which hosts France’s first world-scale biorefinery, has been capable of producing 500,000 tonnes of renewable diesel per year.

This decision is part of the Company’s objective to achieve 75% waste from the circular economy among the raw materials used to produce biofuels from 2024 as well as the acceleration of the production of aviation fuels to position the Company among the leaders in this market

“ This major new investment for an industrial site in France enables the La Mède biorefinery to continue its transformation initiated in 2015. Resolutely focused on low-carbon energies that are growth drivers for TotalEnergies and for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region , La Mède is an example of successful industrial reconversion ,” said Bernard Pinatel, Managing Director of the Refining-Chemicals branch of TotalEnergies .

TotalEnergies contributes to the industrial attractiveness of the PACA region

As part of the transformation project of the La Mède biorefinery, the worksite of which mobilized more than 1,200 full-time equivalent local jobs and for which more than 65% of the contracts were awarded to local companies, TotalEnergies implemented a Voluntary Economic and Social Development Agreement endowed with 5 million euros dedicated to industrial development, research & innovation. Thus, TotalEnergies has supported 14 industrial unit projects in the Fos-Berre basin, thus contributing to the creation of more than 400 jobs.
