2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport five-seater midsize SUV2024 Volkswagen Atlas Cross

London, 13 July, 2023, (Oilandgaspress)-The Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport combines the winning formula of the seven-seater Atlas—ample interior space, plus a host of comfort and technology features at an attractive price—with bold design for a stylish five-seater. Assembled in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the Atlas Cross Sport combines hallmark Volkswagen driving dynamics and attention to detail, setting it apart from the competition. The refreshed 2024 model offers enhanced technology, upgraded interior designs and materials, and a livelier powertrain.

Powertrain
All Atlas Cross Sport models are propelled by one of the most advanced Volkswagen engines ever built, the new “Evo4” 2.0-liter four-cylinder TSI® EA888 engine Producing 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque with regular fuel—an increase of 34 horsepower and 15 lb-ft over the previous generation four-cylinder engine—it offers similar horsepower and more torque over a broader rev range (1600-4500 rpm) than previous six-cylinder models.

Combining direct fuel injection and turbocharging to balance efficiency and power, modifications to the 1,984 cc Evo4 engine include new fuel injectors along with an increase in injection pressure from 200 bar (2,900 psi) to 350 bar (5,076 psi). Improvements to reduce internal engine friction include a new balancer shaft design that already utilized roller bearings, a narrower oil pump drive chain, a simplified valvegear drive-chain tensioner, and a new throttle valve that reduces air leakage.

The engine’s acoustic properties have been additionally refined thanks to noise-reducing reinforcements on the crankcase and upper parts of the oil pan, along with additional sound insulation on the engine’s intake side. Emissions have been improved by increasing the volume of the catalytic converter, ensuring compliance with the latest emissions standards.

Augmenting the EA888’s 16-valve, dual-overhead-camshaft layout is Volkswagen’s latest variable cam phasing system, which controls both intake and exhaust valves, as well as a variable lift system for the exhaust valves. On the Evo4 engine, new ignition coils energize upgraded spark plugs, and the cylinder head is now cast via a more robust bottom-filling method. The cast-iron engine block uses a wall thickness of just 0.12 inches to help contain its weight to only 72 pounds, while lightweight aluminum-alloy screws and fasteners reduce mass.

The engine’s exhaust headers are integrated directly into the cylinder head, optimizing turbocharger proximity and permitting more rapid warm-up (which improves efficiency), while allowing greater thermal management of the exhaust stream. The new Evo4 single-scroll turbocharger feeds intercooled air through the aluminum-alloy crossflow cylinder head, while providing a new V-band mounting connection to the exhaust system and accommodating the greater-volume catalytic converters.

4Motion All-wheel-drive System

Atlas Cross Sport can be equipped with the available 4Motion with Active Control all-wheel-drive system. The latest-generation 4Motion system is designed to activate before wheelspin occurs, helping eliminate traction losses. The system achieves this by using an advanced control function based on specific driving conditions. When operating under a relatively low load or when coasting, the front wheels are driven and the rear wheels are decoupled, a feature designed to help to save fuel. However, the rear wheels can be engaged in fractions of a second whenever necessary via the center differential, which is activated by an electro-hydraulic oil pump.
