(Oilandgaspress) Car and Driver magazine has named both the Golf GTI and the Golf R to its prestigious “10Best” list for 2026. This is the 20th time that the GTI has been awarded the honor and the fifth time for the Golf R. The Car and Driver annual “10Best” list features 10 of the magazine’s most favored new cars, which are judged on value, fun, and mission fulfillment. Nominees consist of all-new vehicles, those with significant updates, 2025 10Best winners, and eligible vehicles that were not available for the 2025 competition. The competition separates out the 10 best cars and the 10 best trucks and SUVs: all must fall under the base-MSRP cap of $115,000 and be on sale in the U.S. by January 31, 2026. The editors evaluated more than 90 new vehicles over two weeks for this year’s awards.

Facelifts for Volkswagen’s 2025 hot hatches brought a fresh look and enhanced technology, along with a power bump for Golf R models, from 315 to 328 horsepower. For 2026, Golf GTI models continue to be available in S, SE, and Autobahn trims, and pricing starts at $34,590 MSRP for S trims.

The 2026 Golf R is available as the standard model only and pricing starts at $49,455 MSRP. The available Euro Style Package adds an Akrapovič™ titanium exhaust system, European sport seats, and sunroof delete for a weight saving of nearly 80 pounds. Destination is $1,275 for both models.
