bp confirms discovery offshore Angola

(Oilandgaspress) -] bp can confirm an oil discovery in the Algaita-01 exploration well offshore Angola, reported by Azule Energy.

Block 15/06, where the well was drilled, is operated by Azule Energy – a 50:50 joint venture between bp and Eni. The Algaita-01 well marks the fourth significant hydrocarbon discovery since the beginning of 2025 for Azule Energy, following the Gajajeira01 gas find in Angola and the Volans-1X and Capricornus-1X discoveries in Namibia’s Orange Basin.

Gordon Birrell, bp’s executive vice president for Production & Operations, said: “This discovery follows an outstanding year of exploration success in 2025. Alongside other recent discoveries in Angola and Namibia through Azule Energy, Algaita-01 is another step forward in building a strong hopper of opportunities for potential future development and underscores bp’s commitment to growing the upstream.”

The Algaita-01 well was drilled using the Saipem 12000 drill ship in a water depth of 667 metres. The well encountered oil-bearing sandstones in multiple Upper Miocene intervals, characterized by excellent petrophysical properties. A comprehensive data acquisition campaign, including fluid sampling, confirmed the quality of the reservoir and the fluid characteristics. The presence of existing nearby development infrastructure further enhances the potential value of the discovery and improves its development prospects.

Azule Energy is the operator of Block 15/06, with a working interest of 36.84%. Co-venturers are SSI (26.32%) and Sonangol E&P (36.84%) The Algaita-01 well was spudded on 10 January, 2026, and is located approximately 18 kilometres from the Olombendo FPSO.

bp announced 12 discoveries in 2025 across several basins, including the Far South discovery in the Gulf of America and well 1-BP-13-SPS at the Bumerangue block in Brazil’s Santos Basin, where it holds 100% participation.
