University of Rochester researchers led by Chunlei Guo developed “unsinkable” superhydrophobic metal tubes using aluminum tubes, chemically etched to create a superhydrophobic surface that remains buoyant even when heavily damaged or in turbulent water. These aluminum tubes use chemically etched micro/nano-structures to trap air, enabling applications in resilient ships and renewable energy harvesting. The surface treats the metal to trap a stable air pocket, preventing water from filling the tube and causing it to sink. Related News
