Engineers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a radar-based system that allows robots and autonomous vehicles to perceive objects hidden around corners, walls, and other obstacles, a capability that could enhance safety in navigation systems that currently rely on direct line-of-sight sensors.

The system, called HoloRadar, was presented at the NeurIPS conference in December 2025 and uses a single millimeter-wave radar sensor combined with artificial intelligence to reconstruct three-dimensional scenes outside a robot’s direct view. Unlike cameras and traditional sensors that fail in darkness or fog, HoloRadar works reliably across varying lighting conditions by exploiting the reflective properties of radio waves The system employs a two-stage AI pipeline to untangle the complex web of reflections from a single radar pulse. The first stage enhances low-resolution radar data and identifies multiple signal returns from different bounce paths. The second stage uses a physics-guided model to trace these reflections backward, effectively reversing the mirroring effects to pinpoint where objects actually sit in three-dimensional space. HoloRadar is designed to complement rather than replace existing sensors like LiDAR and cameras. By adding a layer of perception that covers blind spots those tools cannot reach, it could give autonomous systems more time to react to potential hazards. Related News

Angolan National Agency of Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels together with Azule Energy (36.84%, Operator), and its partners SSI Fifteen Limited (26.32%) and Sonangol E&P (36.84%), announced the discovery made in the Algaita‑01 exploration well, located in Block 15/06 in the offshore Lower Congo Basin, Angola. The well, spudded on 10 January 2026 in a water depth of 667 metres, approximately 18 km from Olombendo FPSO, encountered oil bearing sandstones within Upper Miocene reservoir intervals.
Drilling operations were successfully completed on 26 January, followed by advanced formation evaluation logs to assess reservoir quality and fluid characteristics. Preliminary interpretation of wireline logging and fluid sampling indicates the presence of multiple reservoir intervals with excellent petrophysical properties and fluid mobilities.Initial estimates indicate a discovered oil in place of approximately 500 million barrels..Related News

The UK’s oil and gas production has slumped from some 4.4 million barrels of oil equivalent daily 25 years ago to some 1 million barrels of oil equivalent daily to date. This is seen dropping to as little as 150,000 barrels by 2050. In fact, it may drop even more sharply as several successive governments have focused on a transition away from oil and gas, to be funded with taxes from the oil and gas industry. The problem is, tax receipts tend to go down with production.
The Keir Starmer government has been especially enthusiastic about a transition away from hydrocarbons. Climate change minister Ed Miliband has consistently blamed natural gas prices for high electricity costs at home, refusing, however, to entertain the possibility of boosting local natural gas production to lower these costs. At the same time, the Starmer government has raised the energy industry’s total tax burden to well over two-thirds of income.. Related News

Battery costs continue to fall, enhancing their competitiveness, and pairing technologies such as solar with battery storage is becoming more common. A large global pipeline of announced projects indicates that interest from investors remains strong.
However, many utility-scale battery projects face multi-year delays in securing grid connection and permitting. Projects can also have uncertain or volatile revenue streams, and they may struggle to access affordable financing. In this context, greater efforts to reduce market barriers and address integration challenges are needed to unlock the full potential of this technology.
Global lithium-ion battery deployment in 2025 was six times as high as in 2020. Electric vehicles remain the dominant driver of demand, with global sales reaching a new record and accounting for one-in-four cars sold globally. Electric vehicles account for more than 70% of total lithium-ion battery deployment. This is followed by battery energy storage at over 15%, reflecting the growing role of batteries in providing flexibility in power systems.
At the same time, much of the world’s battery supply chains are concentrated in China. Such high geographic concentration creates considerable risks in terms of supply security, given the growing role batteries play across energy systems and the wider economy, calling for greater efforts to diversify supply chains and to boost innovation.
