Following the Saloon and the Estate, the All-Terrain now follows as the third member of the E‑Class family. With 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard and increased ground clearance – up to 46 mm higher than the classic Estate, even when fully loaded – the new E-Class All-Terrain is ideally equipped for light terrain such as country roads. AIRMATIC air suspension and an off-road driving programme also come as standard. Other practical details for the off-road driving experience include the off-road screen and the “transparent bonnet” as part of the 360-degree camera, which allows the central display to show a virtual view of the road ahead beneath the vehicle. This enables the driver to see obstacles such as large rocks or deep potholes better and earlier.

The striking look is typical of an all-terrain model. Off-road design elements include special bumpers and high-gloss front and rear optical underride guards. The distinctive dark grey matt radiator grille and wheel-arch trims also underline the character of the E-Class All-Terrain. At market launch, customers will be able to choose between diesel, petrol and, for the first time, a plug-in hybrid model. Prices start at 74,077.50 euros[1] for the E 220 d 4MATIC. The E-Class All-Terrain will be available from European dealerships in the first quarter of 2024. The E-Class All-Terrain uses the same product strategy as the Saloon and the Estate models. Compared with the previous generation, the new E-Class comes with a significantly extended range of standard equipment. In Germany, this includes a metallic finish and flush-mounted door handles, as well as KEYLESS-GO and Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC. The standard offering for the German market also includes Blind Spot Assist, heated seats, the AVANTGARDE equipment line for the interior and exterior and the AVANTGARDE Advanced equipment package. Among other features, it includes LED headlights with adaptive High Beam Assist, 12.3-inch and 14.4-inch driver and central displays, as well as heated seats for the driver and front passenger. At the touch of a button, the rear seat folds down to expand the cargo area. Smartphones interface with the MBUX system and charge wirelessly while driving. The MBUX lets the driver access numerous apps from the Mercedes me Store and for example also participate in video conferences using the optional selfie and video camera. Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC and the rear-view camera make parking easier. Read full article

With the world’s first public crash test involving two fully electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz is going above and beyond not only the legal requirements but also those of the ratings industry. Euro NCAP stipulates a frontal impact test using a 1,400 kg trolley with an aluminium honeycomb barrier replicating the front of another vehicle. In accordance with the specifications, the test vehicle and the trolley collide with an overlap and at a speed of 50 km/h. Mercedes-Benz, however, used two real vehicles, an EQA and an EQS SUV, which are significantly heavier at around 2.2 and three tonnes respectively. In addition, both models were faster, each going 56 km/h, which meant that the overall crash energy was considerably higher than required by law. The vehicles’ extensive deformation following the collision may seem alarming to the non-expert. For the Mercedes-Benz engineers, however, it shows that the vehicles were able to effectively absorb the energy of the collision by deforming. As a result, the passenger safety cell of both electric models remained intact and the doors could still be opened. In an emergency, this would make it possible for occupants to exit the vehicle on their own or for first responders and rescue personnel to reach them. The high-voltage system in the EQA and the EQS SUV switched off automatically during the collision.

The crash test at the Group’s Technology Centre for Vehicle Safety in Sindelfingen demonstrates Mercedes‑Benz’s real-life safety philosophy: To make cars that hold up not only in defined crash test scenarios, but also in real-life accidents. The test scenario involving a speed of 56 km/h and 50 percent frontal overlap corresponds to a type of accident common on rural roads, for example during a failed overtaking manoeuvre. The speed selected for the test takes into account that, in a real-life accident, the drivers would still try to brake before the worst case of a collision. Read full article

New technologies are driving development in the automotive industry. Massive volumes of data in vehicles are opening up new possibilities in engineering. Vehicles have long since become powerful computers on wheels, as more and more control units enable more and more functions. This is also evident in the volumes of data being processed in modern vehicles. The standard CAN bus used in vehicles, with its maximum data rate of one megabit per second (Mbps), has long become insufficient. But even Flexray, at ten Mbps, is reaching its limits. That’s why automotive ethernet is now finding its way into vehicles, providing 100 or 1,000 Mbps depending on the variant. There is a flurry of activity on the various bus systems: “It’s safe to assume that a fully equipped vehicle sends around 20 Gbit of data internally every second,” reports Dietmar Luz, Senior Expert Electrics/Electronics at Porsche Engineering.

“It is processed in dozens of control units. By comparison: The first vehicles with intelligence on board had exactly two control units—the engine and brake control units—networked via CAN bus.” In the future, highly automated driving functions in particular will result in ballooning data rates thanks to numerous cameras, radars and lidar sensors. This is already having an impact in engineering: “A test vehicle generates up to 44 terabytes of data per day during highly automated driving,” says Dr. Joachim Schaper, Head of AI and Big Data at Porsche Engineering. “The data is saved to fast hard drives in the luggage compartments of the cars.” From there, it is sent to the cloud, where data from test drives and simulations accumulates during vehicle development. Porsche is being represented by many new releases at the Frankfurt Book Fair. From 18 to 22 October 2023, the sports car manufacturer is presenting a range of books from its own ‘Edition Porsche Museum’ publishing house that have been produced in collaboration with other publishers. The year 2023 is all about celebrating anniversaries for Porsche. On 8 June 1948, the Porsche 356 ‘No. 1’ Roadster received its general operating permit. For Ferry Porsche, this was a dream come true. The dream of a sports car that had never existed before. Thus, the birth of the Porsche brand was 75 years ago. The Frankfurt Book Fair is also celebrating an anniversary this year as it is held for the 75th time. From 18 to 22 October 2023, professional and private visitors can find Porsche in Hall 3.1. There, the sports car manufacturer is presenting many exciting new releases from its ‘Edition Porsche Museum’. Since 2009, the Porsche Museum’s own publishing house has produced publications about the history of the sports car manufacturer. The trade fair stand will be focussing on books commemorating ‘75 Years of Porsche Sports Cars’ and ‘60 Years of the 911’. To mark the 75th birthday of the Porsche 356, Porsche is also presenting this model as a Coupé. The 810 kilogram car dates from 1953. Many decades ago, Porsche enthusiasts gave the nickname ‘Knickscheibe’ to the Coupé with the undivided, ‘bent windscreen’. This vintage car with 40 kW (55 PS) is one of the earliest museum cars and bears the Porsche crest, which has been around since 1952. Read full article

Lamborghini Ad Personam Studio has been transformed, continuing its growth to double its footprint at the Sant’Agata Bolognese headquarters. This expansion allows customers configuring the car of their dreams a new experience, made possible thanks to the combination of physical and digital worlds, as well as myriad possibilities offered by the Ad Personam customization program.

Federico Foschini, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at Automobili Lamborghini, explains: “The Ad Personam program is a project we’ve worked hard on and which we’ve pursued with great conviction. It is a testament of the attention to detail and needs that customers have always recognized and appreciated in Lamborghini. Through the Ad Personam Studio, we offer customers a one-off experience, with the opportunity to personalize their car down to the smallest detail, making it unique.”

The Studio, opened in 2016, has doubled the space dedicated to the program, going from 90 m2 to the current 180 m2, demonstrating how much of a priority the clients’ personalization experience is for the company. The recent renovations represent a true evolution for the Studio, creating an even more high-end environment where customers can experience the essence of Lamborghini in an exclusive but at the same time intimate context, characterized by luxury. Not only has the space dedicated to the Ad Personam experience increased, but the quality of the experience offered too, illustrated by the growing number of reservations from all over the world.

The renovated spaces offer a ‘phygital’ experience, connecting to the real and virtual worlds via multiple tools. Indeed, customers can fully immerse themselves, completely involving all their senses including touching and smelling the upholstery materials; listening to the sound of the engine thanks to upgraded audio equipment; and finally sight, viewing exclusive multimedia materials thanks to a special powerwall. The experience starts with a meeting with one of Lamborghini’s dealers around the world to start defining the general characteristics of the car. Next, customers are invited to continue the configuration with a day at the Ad Personam Studio in Sant’Agata Bolognese, on a journey of infinite choices and drawing inspiration from visiting the production lines.

The new site offers the chance to display all the available options of the Lamborghini range for the first time in one place, according to growing levels of customization that go from more linear configurations defined through “Ad Personam essential”, represented by an expansion of the vehicle Color & Trim offering; to “One Shot” customization, based on specifications requested by the customer or on the use of exclusive or non-automotive materials. Moreover, the design of the Studio spaces and the layout of materials was devised by studying and recreating the optimal configuration process. Indeed, one of the key elements is the color choice and treatment of the vehicle’s external elements, which are the first sensory experience as soon as visitors cross the threshold to the Studio. A revolving platform is located at the center of the room to show off all the details of the vehicle while comfortably sitting in the lounge. Read More

On Indigenous Peoples Day, Rivian invites the community to support the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary designation led by the Northern Chumash Tribal Council. As the first tribally led marine sanctuary campaign, this designation carries historic significance both in terms of indigenous-led conservation and in the proposed protection of Chumash Sacred sites dating back 20,000 years. Indigenous-led conservation is crucial in the ongoing efforts to protect the natural resources of which tribal communities have been the original stewards.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is currently seeking public input on the proposal until October 25. We believe that NOAA can meet the Tribe’s requests, maximize conservation benefits and set a high standard for responsible renewable energy development in the surrounding area. Read More

Iran’s deputy oil minister for international affairs and trade on Thursday said an Iranian knowledge-based company exported various types of catalysts worth some $9 million in the first six month of the current Iranian calendar year (starting March 21, 2023).

Ahmad Asadzadeh, who made the remarks on the sidelines of the 6th Russian Energy week International Forum in Moscow, added the catalyst exported to Russia in the previous year fetched Iran $8 million.

Russia participation

Asadzadeh pointed to talks held between Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, and some managers of Russia’s oil and gas sectors, saying the two sides exchanged views on Russia’s participation in development studies of three Iranian oil fields.

Gas hub talks . Owji held serious talks on Iran’s plan to become a gas hub, said the deputy oil minister, adding negotiations were held in Russia as the two countries’ delegations are exchanging expertise with the aim of putting the creation of a gas hub into action.

Russia investment in Iran

Some Russian companies voiced their willingness to invest in Iran’s petrochemical sector during Owji’s visit to Moscow, mentioned Asadzadeh. Read More

New York regulators on Thursday denied requests by European energy firms Orsted (ORSTED.CO), Equinor (EQNR.OL), BP (BP.L) and other renewable developers to charge customers billions of dollars more under future power sale contracts.

The state denial could force some developers whose contracts may not cover project costs to scrap plans to sell power to customers in New York, cancel or delay projects, as happened with a couple of offshore wind projects in Massachusetts. Developers were looking to renegotiate contracts on four offshore wind and 86 land-based renewable projects. (Reuters) Read More
