London, January 06, 2026, (Oilandgaspress) –US forces have seized a Venezuela-linked oil tanker surrounded surrounded by a Russian escort, in a move that could see Donald Trump risk a dispute with Vladimir Putin.
Anonymous US officials told NBC News the US military and Coast Guard have successfully intercepted the Marinera tanker on Wednesday following a two-week pursuit across the Atlantic.
It comes after reports suggested Putin had sent a navy escort to join the vessel as it moves across the Atlantic ocean towards Russia. Related News
In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump said Venezuela’s interim government would hand over between 30 million and 50 million barrels of “sanctioned oil” to the US, in a move he framed as benefiting both nations. A barrel contains 159 litres. The oil would be sold at market prices and proceeds would be controlled by him as president to ensure they were used “to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States,” Trump posted. UK’s Ministry of Defence confirmed that it had provided “enabling support” to the US during its operation to seize the oil tanker, formerly known as the Bella 1. US forces have boarded the Venezuela-linked sanctioned oil tanker in North Atlantic after pursuing it for weeks, the US military announced on today.
“The vessel was seized in the North Atlantic pursuant to a warrant issued by a US federal court after being tracked by USCGC Munro,” US European Command said in a post on X. CBS News said two US officials confirmed “that Russia had sent a submarine and other Russian naval vessels” as escorts.

The US has seized a tanker linked to Russia off the coast of Europe and a second vessel in the Caribbean in an escalation of the enforcement of the Venezuela oil blockade.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth put the world on notice by saying that the blockade of Venezuelan oil is in full effect, and said no ship is safe anywhere in the world.
The Russian Transport Ministry then responded by saying: ‘no state has the right to use force against vessels properly registered in other countries’ jurisdictions.’ It added that US forces boarded the Marinera at 3pm Moscow time, where communications were shortly lost with the vessel after.
