EU to Mandate Recycled Plastics in Vehicles

EU to Mandate Recycled Plastics in Vehicles

London, December 12, 2025, (Oilandgaspress) ––European carmakers will be required to use more recycled plastics in new vehicles under a provisional EU agreement. The deal mandates that at least 25% of plastics in cars, trucks, and motorcycles be recycled within 10 years, with an intermediate target of 15% in six years. At least 20% of these recycled materials must come from scrap vehicles.

The EU will introduce its first mandatory targets for recycled plastics in vehicles, requiring at least 25% of plastics to be recycled by 2036, with 20% of that coming from end-of-life vehicles (ELVs). The rules will apply to both EU-made and imported vehicles, while improved ELV treatment standards will ensure at least 30% of plastics from scrap cars are recycled, boosting material recovery and quality.

The agreement still requires formal approval by the European Council and European Parliament.
