Europe Versus UK Automotive Industry

UK vehicle manufacturing fell for a fourth consecutive month in November, reflecting factory retooling for EVs, production disruptions and consolidation in van manufacturing, according to new SMMT data. Despite the slowdown, industry confidence is growing, with a return to growth expected in 2026. A key positive signal is the start of next-generation Nissan LEAF production in Sunderland, backed by a £450 million investment.

Trade remains critical for recovery. The modernised UK–South Korea free trade agreement was welcomed, but the EU remains the UK’s most important automotive partner. Concerns have been raised that the European Commission’s new Automotive Package could put the UK out of regulatory alignment and disadvantage UK-made vehicles if new flexibilities are tied only to EU-produced cars. Industry leaders are urging closer UK–EU cooperation to protect supply chains, competitiveness and consumer choice.
