I2SL Launches Labs2Zero Program to Help Reduce Energy and Emissions From Research Facilities

ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#Labs2Zero–Due to the air quality needs of research, most labs use more energy and generate more greenhouse gas emissions than typical office buildings. To address this issue, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) has launched the Labs2Zero program in cooperation with leading lab experts and sponsor companies to help decarbonize life science facilities.

“Labs2Zero is a major new initiative helping accelerate the decarbonization of the world’s laboratories to dramatically reduce their emissions,” said I2SL President Gordon Sharp. “Our founding sponsors are at the forefront of sustainable laboratory design, operations, and equipment and continue to demonstrate leadership in making labs more efficient and reducing their impact on climate change.”

Labs2Zero will help laboratory owners, operators, designers, engineers, and users better understand their energy use and carbon footprint with tools that are currently in development:

Energy and Emissions Scorecard for Laboratories: Current building energy and emissions rating programs do not properly address laboratories. By inputting data into the I2SL Laboratory Benchmarking Tool, lab managers will receive a score to see how they compare to their peers.

Actionable Insights and Measures Report: Based on their energy and emissions score, labs will receive suggestions for energy and emissions reduction measures and relevant case studies.

Design2Zero Tool: For lab owners and designers wishing to achieve superior energy and emissions performance, Labs2Zero will offer specific systems and design features to include.

Certification, Accreditation, and Training: Lab owners that seek independent verification will be able to have trained, accredited professionals certify their scores.

To help launch the program, experienced professionals from the lab architecture, engineering, life science real estate, academic, lab supply, and pharmaceutical community are contributing their time and expertise to a variety of technical advisory councils that will ensure the program meets the needs of lab stakeholders. In addition, contributions from founding sponsors will help fund development of criteria and tools to support the Labs2Zero program components.
