IDC Report Highlights Corinex as Leader in Power Sector’s Nascent Shift to Broadband
Report details growing need for utilities to adopt broadband to manage rapidly changing, increasingly complex electric grid
VANCOUVER, British Columbia–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Corinex Communications Corp., a world leader in broadband-power line technology, announced today that IDC, one of the premier research and media firms in the United States, identified Corinex as a leading supplier of broadband-power-line (BPL) solutions. In a published report, IDC found that all utilities that implemented mass rollouts of BPL chose Corinex products for their deployments.
In the report, IDC noted that given the technology’s ability to transmit data quickly and securely, broadband will soon become mainstream in the utility industry. IDC stated that BPL offers “a good balance of technical capabilities (e.g., low latency, high availability) and cost, as this technology uses existing power line wiring to transmit the signal.” The report also added that “Field results obtained so far demonstrate that these [BPL] products can reach physical data rates in the range of 150 to 250 Mbps.”
“With the global drive towards renewables and electric vehicles, utilities will soon have to process unprecedented amounts of data to monitor and manage continuously decentralizing energy networks,” said Peter Sobotka, Corinex founder and CEO. “Corinex is a pioneer in developing a full suite of broadband-based solutions to help utilities and energy service providers supply reliable, secure and increasingly clean power.”
Corinex’s latest field-tested products are based on G.hn., the current networking standard of the International Telecommunications Union, which is compatible with internet protocol version 6 (IP v.6). This protocol is endorsed for standardized BPL applications by the PoweRline Intelligent Metering Evolution (PRIME) Alliance, an association of leading utilities and suppliers. Corinex products based on this protocol are capable of high bandwidth and cyber-secure operations.
IDC’s report stated that “the need for lower latency [and] cyber-secure communication, will top the priorities list of future smart grids. BPL semiconductors have significant computational power that enables the future implementation of edge computing, AI, and even blockchain applications in BPL nodes.”
“Regulators have already mandated that utilities offer consumers and decentralized producers both security and real-time data about the grid, pricing, and power use,” continued Sobotka. “Providing this information securely requires high-speed communication and systems to manage millions of interconnected devices. Utilities are now starting to leverage their existing infrastructure to adopt broadband to transmit millions of messages per minute, which is required to manage increasingly complex networks.”
IDC’s report detailed four specific use cases that utilities in Europe have validated. In each use case, the utilities conducting the rollouts of BPL solutions chose Corinex equipment and software. The four use cases tested were:
- BPL smart meters with BPL concentrators, enabling edge computing in the electric grid.
- Coexistence of BPL and narrowband powerline communication, enabling utilities to incrementally add BPL to existing narrowband solutions.
- BPL smart meter gateways, enabling sensing and demand management.
- BPL on medium voltage lines, enabling backhaul and traffic aggregation in the network formed by the electric grid.
Corinex is the world leader in broadband-power-line technology and solutions. Corinex offers utilities and energy service providers a full suite of high-performance networking products and software solutions, enabling high-speed and secure connections for millions of devices over existing powerline infrastructure. Handling millions of messages per minute enables utilities to monitor performance, predict usage, optimize network performance, and provide required information to both consumers and decentralized producers of electricity.
