30 Jan The new Mercedes‑Benz S‑Class
(Oilandgaspress) -] The latest evolution of the S‑Class delivers its most extensive update in one generation, taking a leading role in the most ambitious product launch programme in Mercedes‑Benz history. With more than 50 per cent of the S‑Class – around 2,700 components – newly developed or re-engineered, it reaffirms a legacy of aspiration, engineering and digital ambition, and progress.
The new S‑Class asserts its status with a bolder silhouette and, for the first time, an illuminated grille, enlarged by around 20 per cent and accented with redesigned, three-dimensional chrome stars. At its peak, the new eight-cylinder engine (M 177 Evo) in the Mercedes-Benz S 580 4MATIC Saloon long version delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 750 Nm of torque. Engineering upgrades and mild-hybrid technology support seamless power delivery, energy recuperation and exceptional smoothness, while meeting the latest emissions standards and ensuring a tranquil cabin experience. Thanks to a refined injection system, optimised intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft, a flat-plane crank with a new firing order and improvements to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing, the V8 now responds more quickly and efficiently and delivers an even more refined driving experience.

The six‑cylinder petrol engine (M 256 Evo) in the Mercedes-Benz S 450 4MATIC Saloon long version and Mercedes-Benz S 500 4MATIC Saloon long version now responds even more dynamically, with torque increased up to 600 Nm; and up to 640 Nm using overtorque. Overtorque means a short-term increase in torque value to provide the S‑Class with more tractive force in certain driving situations, like overtaking or acceleration. Key improvements include a more powerful electric auxiliary compressor, optimised intake and exhaust ports, and a revised intake camshaft. Enhanced insulation measures provide superior noise and vibration damping, creating an exceptionally calm ambience at any speed.
The plug-in hybrid option with an electric range of around 100 km[22] combines this upgraded six-cylinder engine with a powerful electric motor, increasing system output by up to 55 kW over the previous engine generation and delivering an even smoother and more responsive drive in the Mercedes‑Benz S 580 e 4MATIC Saloon long version with EQ Hybrid Technology and Mercedes‑Benz S 450 e Saloon long version with EQ Hybrid Technology. Petrol particulate filters and pressurised tanks are now standard worldwide, underscoring the commitment to efficiency and refinement. Together, these powertrains deliver the perfect balance of strength, composure and innovation – ensuring the new S‑Class remains the ultimate expression of driving confidence and long‑distance comfort.
For those who prefer diesel power, the Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC Saloon long version and Mercedes‑Benz S 450 d 4MATIC Saloon long version feature the new six-cylinder OM 656 Evo. Developed to meet future emissions legislation, it introduces the first series-production use of an electrically heated catalytic converter for faster and more efficient exhaust aftertreatment. Robustness improvements in exhaust gas recirculation, cooling and crankcase ventilation further enhance durability and efficiency.

All three engines feature a 17 kW integrated starter-generator (ISG). The integrated starter-generator, available with both petrol and diesel engines, provides intelligent support in the low-rpm range. In combination with turbocharging, this ensures excellent power delivery. The system includes the 48-volt electrical system, which enables functions such as “coasting”, boost or recuperation and thus significant fuel savings. In addition, the engines start very quickly and comfortably with the help of the ISG, so that the start-stop function is almost imperceptible to the driver, as is the transition from “coasting” with the engine stationary to powerful propulsion with engine power. When idling, the intelligent interaction between the ISG and the combustion engine ensures outstandingly smooth running.
The new DIGITAL LIGHT twin-star headlamp design not only creates an iconic look day and night, but also enhances visibility, helping drivers feel more confident on any road. At the rear, newly designed taillights with three chrome-framed signature stars reinforce the S‑Class identity, ensuring a lasting impression. For added distinction, an integrated light projector in the side sill trim casts the “Mercedes‑Benz” lettering as a lighting scheme next to the car, greeting passengers and turning every entry and exit into a special moment.

The new S‑Class brings the latest Mercedes‑Benz technology to centre stage. At its core is the purpose-built Mercedes‑Benz Operating System (MB.OS), which comes with a new service-oriented electrical and electronic architecture. This supercomputer powers every domain — from assistance to infotainment to driving performance — delivering faster processing, greater computing power and a deeply integrated experience. MB.OS connects all systems into one intelligent ecosystem and is the base for MB.DRIVE and MBUX. Its connection to the Mercedes‑Benz Intelligent Cloud enables over-the-air updates for numerous vehicle functions, keeping the S‑Class digitally up to date and attractive throughout its life. The result: the new S‑Class becomes an intuitive companion, delivering seamless interaction, exceptional performance, and future-ready intelligence for every passenger — creating a driving experience that is smarter, safer and more personal than ever before.
Powered by MB.OS, the fourth generation of MBUX comes to the S‑Class. It comes with AI from ChatGPT4o and Microsoft Bing as well as Google Gemini, combining multiple AI agents in one system. With that, the new MBUX Virtual Assistant “Hey Mercedes” revolutionises the relationship between the vehicle and the passengers in every seat.
