Toyota Times News reports on Fukushima Prefecture’s latest efforts on the frontlines of producing and using hydrogen.

Since 2021, the prefecture and Toyota have been working together on public trials aimed at creating the cities of the future using hydrogen technology.

At the outset, then-President Akio Toyoda made the following comment during a visit to the town of Namie:

“We hope to play our part in trialing the use of green hydrogen.”

Two years on, Governor Masao Uchibori tells Toyota Times that “having endured a nuclear disaster, for Fukushima a hydrogen-energy future is now close at hand.” Watch the full video to see how Fukushima is bringing us closer to a future hydrogen society.

Yuta Tomikawa’s first stop was the Denso Fukushima plant, which in March unveiled a new water electrolyzer that produces hydrogen by, as the name suggests, electrolyzing water.

These devices are said to draw on technology from a certain Toyota model. Do the words water, electricity, and hydrogen ring any bells?

The path to decarbonization requires efforts to cut CO2 emissions from the production of clean energy, including hydrogen. Denso Fukushima will aim to become carbon-neutral by running its plants on the hydrogen energy produced with this new equipment.

Next, Tomikawa checked out a hydrogen-powered food truck scheduled to begin operation in April. Here, doing away with the need for conventional generators made a drastic difference.

After sampling the food truck’s dishes made with locally-grown ingredients, Tomikawa asked if there was meaning behind the “5924” license plate, and was surprised by the unusual response. Find the answer in the video.

The program also features hydrogen fuel cell trucks used for product delivery, which sixty companies in the prefecture plan to introduce into their fleets. At the same time, there have also been calls for improving some key areas of the trucks. Read More

Volkswagen of America, Inc. and Redwood Materials, Inc. will offer consumers a convenient way to recycle rechargeable devices or lithium-ion batteries. Participating Volkswagen dealerships will offer Redwood bins for easy and safe drop off of rechargeable batteries and consumer devices, including cell phones, laptops, tablets, cordless power tools, electric toothbrushes, wireless headphones, and old vacuum batteries.

The collaboration between Volkswagen Group of America and Redwood began last year with a strategic recycling deal for all Volkswagen and Audi electric vehicle battery packs and a shared vision to create a circular EV economy.

According to Redwood, its technology can recover more than 95% of the critical minerals from batteries (like nickel, cobalt, lithium, and copper) and then manufacture the metals into battery components that are supplied to U.S. battery manufacturers for new electric vehicles and energy storage products. If adopted across the industry, battery recycling programs like this could help reduce battery costs as well as the need to mine and ship raw materials.

“Volkswagen’s goal is to provide more accessible and more sustainable electric mobility for American drivers,” said Andrew Savvas, Executive Vice President, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Volkswagen North American Region. “By engaging our dealers, Volkswagen is providing access for consumers to contribute to sustainable mobility.”

The consumer recycling program officially launches at 14 dealerships in time for Earth Day on April 22, with a soft launch at the Volkswagen booth during the New York International Auto Show April 5 – 16. Additional dealerships will be added throughout the year. Read More

Bentley Motors today announces it is putting Diversity and Inclusion strategy at the very core of the business with a new and expanded team with a direct reporting line into the CEO. Moving from the sole responsibility of Human Resources, D&I will sit within the cross-functional Communications department, falling under the joint leadership of Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO, and Dr. Karen Lange, Board Member for Human Resources.

The restructure aims to speed the rollout of Bentley’s five pillar D&I strategy which is focused on outreach, recruitment, succession planning, culture and development. Key to this strategy is the establishment of colleague diversity networks to help Bentley embed an understanding of diversity and inclusion within its workplace and support the understanding, development, and attraction of the future talent, creativity, ideas, and customers who will help it achieve success in the next generation of products.

The networks now number five across different aspects of diversity with nearly 500 colleagues equalling more than 10 per cent of the workforce actively participating. Recognising the importance of diverse experiences and perspectives to drive creativity and innovation, Bentley has also set a target of increasing diversity in management to 30 per cent in 2025 and is establishing a roadmap to help it achieve this.

As part of the restructure, Wayne Bruce becomes Chief Communications and D&I Officer, adding Bentley’s D&I strategy to his area of responsibility. Bruce will report to both Adrian Hallmark and Karen Lange.

Anne Hoerner, Head of D&I, moves from the Humans Resources department, to work with Wayne Bruce within the Communications team, helping to implement and embed the D&I strategy across the organisation. Stefanie Lackner, Head of Sustainability Communications, continues to lead D&I communications inside, and outside of the business and becomes the third member of the D&I team.

Commenting on the strategic change, Adrian Hallmark, Chairman and CEO, said:

“We know that diversity drives success and by bringing a greater range of experience, creativity as well as inclusion, allows co-operation to play in business strategy, innovation and decision-making. We firmly believe that it is a fundamental part of the business and therefore should be a core function that touches every single area of the organisation.

“Our ethos is that a rich and inclusive culture, where everyone is supported to achieve their full potential, is what will help to drive our business forward, and so working closely with this newly formed team, we are confident of achieving our aim of becoming the most diverse luxury car manufacturer in the world.”

The ‘Beyond100’ strategy announced in 2020 sets out how Bentley will become a trailblazer in sustainable luxury mobility. Bentley was the first company in its sector to state its aim to become end-to-end carbon neutral in 2030; the first to introduce plug-in electric luxury cars; the only luxury car factory in the world to be certified carbon neutral for the fourth year in a row; and the first to secure net zero plastic to nature certification.

But Beyond100 is more than sustainability. Bentley also wants to become the most diverse luxury car company, with colleagues as extraordinary and eclectic as its customers and the cars they commission which can be ordered in over 40 billion different configurations.

Bentley takes a zero-tolerance stance on any form of prejudice or discrimination. But it is also proud to employ colleagues from 52 different nationalities and works to support diversity and inclusivity in all forms: irrespective of race, age, gender, background, sexual orientation, nationality, or ethnicity, mental or physical disabilities, or beliefs.

Bentley’s mission is simple. It wants its business to reflect its global customer base and, most importantly of all, ensure that all colleagues work in an environment where they feel safe to bring their true self to work. This goes hand-in-hand with an ethos that only a rich and inclusive culture, where everyone is supported to achieve their full potential, regardless of their background, is what will help to steer Bentley forward for the next one hundred years. MoU signed between Wilo and Proton Motor Fuel Cell

| Multinational technology group and hydrogen fuel cell specialist intend long-term co-operation for green self-sufficient energy supply. | Puchheim near Munich, March 30, 2023 – It was not until September 2022 that the delivery of three hydrogen fuel cell systems “HyFrame® S36” was announced, which were manufactured by the high-tech company “Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH” for “Wilo” . The premium supplier of pumps and pump systems has integrated the three modular and universally applicable “HyFrame®” solutions as components into Wilo’s own “H₂Powerplant”. The innovative hydrogen plant at the Dortmund headquarters “Wilopark” ensures the production of green energy based on renewable resources. This supports the sustainable energy transition for industrial companies in the context of the Paris climate protection goals and to achieve energy self-sufficiency. In addition to plant engineering, Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH and Wilo have agreed on a “Memorandum of Understanding” (MoU), in order to strengthen contracts with the aim of decentralised and decarbonised energy supply. Among other things, the MoU provides for the definition of topics and tasks in climate-neutral infrastructure projects for the production and use of green hydrogen, with Wilo acting as a general contractor for the co-operation. In addition, the network of the other side will be analysed with regard to possible synergies. There will also be an identification of eco-friendly product applications to what extent they complement the respective existing or future corporate brand portfolio. The current order demand for Proton Motor`s “Made in Germany” quality product “HyFrame®” remains high. For example, as an exhibit for the “ISH 2023” leading trade fair, Wilo has ordered another “HyFrame® S36” system. In addition, three “HyFrame® S43” units have been arranged in the product innovation of the mobile containerised power plant “HyShelter® 240” for Shell. Since last year, the infrastructural emergency power supply for the Swiss road tunnel “Neuenhof Tunnel” in the canton of Aargau has been secured by the “HyFrame® S28” solution. Read More

The Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) is pleased to announce the launch of the fourth edition of its Annual Gas Market Report (AGMR). The Report provides an in-depth analysis of natural gas markets, covering recent developments and providing prospects for 2023-2024.

Eng. Mohamed Hamel, Secretary General of the GECF said: “The Annual Gas Market Reportis comprehensive and I hope it will become an essential tool for anyone interested in natural gas.”

The key findings of the report are:

• Record-high and volatile spot prices in Europe and Asia
Spot gas and LNG prices in Europe and Asia reached record highs in 2022, with significant volatility throughout the year. This was mainly due to a tight LNG market as Europe’s LNG demand surged to replace lower pipeline gas imports.

• Energy security takes precedence over climate change mitigation goals
Energy security concerns took precedence over climate change mitigation goals in 2022, with policymakers focusing on meeting the energy needs of their people.

• Global gas consumption declined in 2022, but expected to resume growth in 2023
Following a record rebound in 2021, global gas consumption declined in 2022 but is expected to resume growth in 2023 and reach an all-time high level, with the power generation sector remaining the largest consumer of gas. U.S., China, and some emerging countries in Asia Pacific are forecasted to drive the growth of global gas consumption in 2023.

• Investment in oil and gas increases, but looming uncertainties may deter investment
Oil and gas investment increased by 7% y-o-y to reach $718 billion in 2022, and is expected to rise further in 2023, but looming uncertainties may deter investment.

• CCS/CCUS and hydrogen gain momentum for decarbonisation, but number of projects still far from required scale
CCS/CCUS and hydrogen have gained momentum as potential pathways for decarbonisation, with a significant increase in the announced capacity. However, the number of projects that have reached the FID stage is still far from the required scale.

The publication comes at a time when natural gas markets are undergoing fundamental transformations in terms of physical flows, investment, trade, and market functioning.

“The developments in the gas industry are an indication of the bright prospects for the expansion of the global gas industry, as natural gas is set to play a pivotal role in socio-economic development and towards just and inclusive energy transitions,” added Eng. Hamel. Read More
