EPA and the Department of Justice announced three separate settlements with natural gas processors that will require the companies to pay a combined $9.25 million in civil penalties and make improvements at 25 gas processing plants and 91 compressor stations. These settlements will reduce harmful air pollution and improve air quality in 12 states, including in communities disproportionately impacted by pollution and in Indian Country. The states of Alabama, Colorado, Louisiana, North Dakota, West Virginia, and Wyoming, and the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, also are settling claims against the companies.

When fully implemented, the combined settlements with The Williams Companies, Inc., MPLX LP, and WES DJ Gathering LLC f/k/a Kerr-McGee Gathering LLC will reduce ozone-producing air pollution by an estimated 953 tons per year and greenhouse gases by 50,633 tons per year of carbon dioxide equivalent, including methane. This reduction equates to taking 11,267 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for one year. The settlements, lodged simultaneously today in the Federal District Courts of Colorado and Utah, resolve allegations that the companies violated the Clean Air Act and state air pollution control laws. Next-generation solar panels
Researchers at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) have discovered a new method to increase the efficiency of solar cells by a factor of 1,000. The team of scientists achieved this breakthrough by creating crystalline layers of barium titanate, strontium titanate, and calcium titanate, which were alternately placed on top of one another in a lattice structure.

Their findings, which could revolutionize the solar energy industry, were recently published in the journal Science Advances. Read More

Ban of fluorescent lighting in the UK & EU
Did you know the RoHS of the EU/UK (Reduction of Hazardous Substances) are restricting the use of certain hazardous substances in electric and electronic equipment?

This includes the use of mercury in lighting products. The directive includes exemptions for a series of products that have now been revised by the European Commission – this has had huge impacts on fluorescent lighting.

The SLR (Single Lighting Regulation) are additionally phasing out products that fail to meet efficiency requirements. Together both regulations are helping to protect the environment and public health, by enforcing climate friendly, sustainable lighting.Fluorescent lighting has also been linked with depression, reduced productivity and eyestrain, something business and building owners need to avoid in order to meet employees’ physiological needs. NREL and Partners Build All-Data Approach for Automated Grid Recovery The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is leading a project that uses pervasive data and renewable energy to identify and isolate outages, enabling communities to expand awareness of grid conditions during resilience events. With partner technologies and community input, NREL will demonstrate an automated, affordable, all-in-one method for grid resilience, which can and will be used by vulnerable communities and the utilities that service them. The project is named Solar-HERO (Solar-Assisted, Stakeholder-Engaged Autonomous Restoration with Data Orchestration) and is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office as part of its RACER program. Community Demo With Rural Co-Ops Will Use Solar, Storage, and Sensors to Stop Outages Read More

Laboratory Propels Earth’s Inhabitants Toward a Cleaner Future

U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have spent their days studying, analyzing, and developing clean energy solutions that sustainably harness the planet’s resources. The mission of Earth Day and the vision behind NREL are, in many ways, broadly aligned. Aside from the fact that Earth Day Network founder Denis Hayes also served as NREL’s second laboratory director, both NREL and Earth Day aim to pave a path toward a brighter, cleaner, healthier future for the planet and its inhabitants. Much aligned to Earth Day’s theme of “Investing in Our Planet,” the research and innovations developed at NREL are helping consumers on Earth Day and every day contribute to our beautiful blue marble’s future. Here are just a few of the ways. Read More

Overseeing tests for the 2.5-tonne Land Cruiser
Toyota run the cars through walls of snow more than 50 or 60 cm deep, checking to see whether repeatedly getting stuck or driving on snowy roads damages the bumpers, for example, or if the churned snow causes problems by getting into the radiator. Getting through unscathed is the greatest sense of accomplishment. I want to build cars that can take on these snowy roads and make the drive fun. When stuck in deep snow, drivers tend to step on the gas, but we also try to anticipate someone doing the opposite and easing off, along with various other situations that users might get into.Read More

Neste supplies sustainable aviation fuel to Air Canada Neste and Air Canada are expanding their collaboration with an additional supply of 2.5 million gallons (9.5 million liters or 7,500 tons) of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™. The sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied to Air Canada will be blended with conventional jet fuel and used to power the airline’s flights from the San Francisco International Airport.

Air Canada has committed to the ambitious goal of net-zero emissions from all its global operations by 2050. It has set mid-term targets for reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2030 from both its air and ground operations compared to its 2019 baseline.

“At Air Canada, we have adopted a multifaceted approach to addressing climate change and sustainability. Environmental and social factors are incorporated into our strategic decisions, as are our fleet purchases and daily operations through our support of low-carbon alternatives. SAF comprises one of our core pillars in pursuing our net-zero emission targets. We have been purchasing Neste’s SAF since February 2022. Today’s announced purchase represents a five-fold increase in our SAF procurement year over year and is an important step towards our target of one per cent fuel to be SAF by 2025, supporting our journey towards our 2050 net zero decarbonization goals,” said Michael Rousseau, President and CEO at Air Canada.
